Interview with Dhesan Pillay

Published 2014-07-28.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing my first stories at the age of 6. Initially these were merely my own versions of how movies I watched should have panned out. In high school, I began exploring fantasy short stories and one of them led me to the idea of writing a full length novel.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a story that I wanted to share with the world and was not content to let the many rejections of publishers prevent that from being achieved.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are the motivation that keeps me writing and wanting to share portions of my soul with them.
What are you working on next?
The sequel to the Anmorian Legends: The Wrath of the Exiled. I have just started on this new project, title will follow.
Who are your favorite authors?
J. K. Rowling, Stephen King, Terry Goodkind, J. R. R. Tolkien, Arthur Conan Doyle and Michael Crichton
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as a junior doctor performing my internship in the public health care setting in South Africa.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through Good Reads.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a silly story about a boy who played a very addictive computer game and found himself trapped in the game needing to escape before his birthday. I think my mum shouting at my excessive gaming may have inspired this.. maaaybe
How do you approach cover design?
I consider what the most important moment or character in my story is. For the Wrath of the Exiled, this was the Exiled Guardian who appears on the front cover. I like the idea of stark colors beside each other as it captures the eye better. Once I create a cover concept I test it out with a group of friends who read in that genre and adjust accordingly.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to travel to a completely improbable world and realize that through resolving issues in that world they very often parallel real life situations that may be similarly solved.
