Interview with Elaine Rose

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a Halloween story about a witch with illustrations and everything. I was in first grade. I stared early.
What do you read for pleasure?
Just about anything that catches my attention. Usually supernatural in nature, but if it has an interesting story line or seems funny I'll give it a shot.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Something modifiable with an expandable memory. I have over 10,000 books in my digital library and many of those are collections with 4- 40 full novels in them. I need my space. I also do my reading offline so it's important to be able to download and side load. I also prefer a good ereader app such as the full Moon+ Reader Pro or Calibre to be able to organize my digital library.
Describe your desk
Which one? For me, anywhere that's a flat surface is my desk. Kitchen table, secretary's desk, laptop table, computer stand, every room in my house has a 'desk' in it. I even keep a lap desk next to my recliner.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My family moved around a lot. I didn't really stay in one place more than 2 years or so, so I was fairly isolated socially. I didn't form attachments to people not just because of the moving around, but because of the toxic environment at home. My stories and writing provided a way to deal with the problems at home, a way to process and express myself in a safe way. I could disguise my emotions and pain in stories that had hidden meanings that I could express myself in that would be less likely trigger retribution. It was less where I grew up that influenced and still influences my writing and more 'how' I grew up. Writing (and reading) wasn't just my escape, but my therapy and a way to survive. By fleshing out my characters and what made them react and act the way they would it helped me to see perspectives from others' point of view and understand why I was being treated how I was.
What attracted you to indie publishing?
I read a bunch of indie authors, some of them are really amazing. I also know someone that has been doing it for years so I decided, why not? I love to write and have a bunch of books in the works along with a few series so I get to do what I love and share it with others, win win. I also enjoy the control I have over my work and schedule. Some authors are able to write full time, some have to do it in their spare time after work or while taking care of their families or other responsibilities. I have to work around health issues, there can be months when I'm not able to write so the freedom and versatility of indie publishing works for me.
What are you currently working on?
'Balance' is my debut novel. It's a wolf shifter romance about a woman named Laci who 'accidentally' receives a package containing a priceless artifact. When she goes to turn it over to it's rightful owner she gets pulled into the world of wolf shifters. It's a stand alone novel, but as ideas brew there may be more books in the shifter universe.
What's the story behind your next book?
After my debut novel 'Balance' is published I'll be working on a dragon shifter series. Each book is a stand alone but with overlapping characters. It involves the theft of digital information from a dragon shifter colony. While trying to track down the thief and make sure the existence of shifters is not revealed to the world a pair of dragon shifters travels down the west coast, stumbling on an attempted kidnapping and rescuing a woman from the man who believes he owns her.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm just starting, so we'll have to see, but I like the fact that they can distribute to a multitude of vendors and I don't have to set up accounts at each individual site.
Who are your favorite authors?
I read so many different authors I can't really say I have a favorite. It depends on the mood I'm in, to what I want to read, I have actually been finding I prefer reading indie authors over mainstream.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Each day is a gift. Having health issues that keep me down at times has really given me perspective. Each day I have where I'm able to get out of bed and be active is a blessing and each day that I'm not I have to actively keep in mind that it's only temporary and to keep in mind all that I have been able to accomplish already. I want to enjoy every day that I have, while I have them; even the days I'm restricted to the couch.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Sculpting! I love sculpting figures out of polyclay. Cartoon figures, fantasy figures, animals, flowers and more!
