Interview with John Darling

Published 2022-03-21.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I write to entertain people. If I gather fans, in any amount, I know that I have accomplished that feat. I love the fact that there are people who enjoy my work so much, that they would be a fan of it and watch for my next publication.
What are you working on next?
Right at this moment, nothing in particular. I have a few projects started but I have yet to decide which one to finish first. When I have times like these, and all authors have them, I work on marketing and refining my work.
Who are your favorite authors?
H.G. Wells, Kurt Vonnegut, John Grisham, Michael Conelly, Mary Stewart, Sarah Paretsky, Michael Chricton, Mark Twain
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Fishing and biking. Which I also write about.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually via recommendations by friends and Twitter contacts.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a book called, "The Monster of Mullville". I never finished it but since I never throw anything away, I still have it over 50 years later. I blogged about it on my Substack site: https://johndarling.substack.com/p/never-throw-anything-away-ever-86b?s=r
What is your writing process?
Scatterbrained would be the best answer; I really have no "process" as such. I only write short fiction, articles, and novellas, so when an idea strikes me, I write about it. I have been inspired to write by as little as me throwing a rock in the desert.
How do you approach cover design?
I use Canva for covers. I try to make the cover of my books intriguing. You can't judge a book by its cover, but you can SELL a book by its cover if done right.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly crime and legal fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Kindle 10" Fire.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social Media. Everywhere.
