Interview with Ian Macdonald

Where were you born
I was born and raised in Liverpool during WW11. My father was a policeman and my mother was a housewife. My mother died when I was ten years old and my father re-married when i was thirteen. I joined a military college when I was fifteen and upon graduation from there served for nine years with the British Army.
What prompted you to start writing
Actually it was my father's death that prompted me to take up writing. I learned more about my dad after he died than I knew whilst he was alive. They were little things here and there, but added together they painted quite a picture. There was so much that I didn't know. I then realized that my boys would be in the same boat as I had kept so much to myself about my early life and military service. This prompted me to write a brief auto biography about my life for their benefit. I had never written before, but once I had completed it I then thought I could actually write a book if I put my mind to it. That was how it all started.
How are you characters formed in your mind
My characters are all fictional, but they are based on a lifetime of experience and observation both in my military and civil positions. The stories and situations are purely fictional, but certain elements may pertain to similar events that provided me with the idea. I served briefly as a prison officer when I left the military and this experience opened my eyes to whole new way of thinking. I draw a lot from those days when writing a crime drama.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My Latest book relates to a young man who had just lost his wife to cancer. He was of course devastated by this and his friends persuaded him to go on the cross country train ride he had always wanted to take in order to get him away from his familiar surroundings and memories. He meets numerous people on that trip and each of them had their own stories to tell. Emotional and gripping stories they were too. Those people had a dramatic impact on his life and he in turn did on theirs. The book is entitled The Unforgettable Journey and it most certainly was that.
How successful have you been as an author.
Well that depends on the definition of success in that context. In financial terms I have a long way to go and I certainly qualify as a starving artist type right now. However, the people who have read my books liked them or so they said. That alone means that I am successful - at least in giving enjoyment to others and that is what it is all about. Nobody can please everyone as we all have different tastes in literature. I write for fun as a hobby if you like - and if people find my books enjoyable, then that to me is success and I am happy.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Without Smashwords people would not know about my work. They give me the exposure and allow others to view my work either as a sample or direct download. Electronic media is the future and traditional publishing is on the decline, not to mention prohibitively expensive for rookie authors.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I don't really know to be honest. I guess having people enjoy my book. I have fun doing it, but having others embrace it too is the icing on the cake for me I guess.
