Interview with John F Leonard

Published 2017-11-08.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media and plain old word of mouth
Describe your desk
Spartan verging on a mess. I write and work standing up.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
The industrial Midlands. The past never leaves you, it just bleeds through.
When did you first start writing?
I can't remember when I first wrote my name. I do recall struggling with it : )
Flippancy aside, as soon as I could start stringing words together, I started to write stories.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Calls Drops is a short (ish) story that's been rattling round my head for fifteen years, Bad Pennies, the novel I've just published, goes back to my childhood. It's a standalone story, the last of three books, a retrogressive trilogy (the other two aren't finished).
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love reading and writing and don't like being told what to do : )
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
We live in hope.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Going away for a while and then reading it fresh ...then remembering that you wrote it.
What are you working on next?
Another couple of short stories and after there are approximately twelve options/projects.
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm a big fan of Stephen King - lots of others as well, too many to list.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
You just know that something good is gonna happen. Something bad as well. Everything is best I guess ...and I'm glad to still be dragging air in and out of my lungs.
