Interview with Janae Mitchell

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I remember reading was "The Dollhouse Murders" by Betty Ren Wright when I was in the fourth grade. It was spooky with an element of the paranormal, as well as mystery, scaring me at times. I absolutely loved it! Of course, the paranormal world has stuck with me ever since then.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Most definitely bloggers. (I ♥ bloggers!) They have a passion for books and an eagerness to help new authors, like myself.
Describe your desk
My lap is very often my desk. But my 'designated' desk is beautiful, made for me by my dad, and is never cluttered, which makes me nervous.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Tennessee, where all of my writing takes place. I'm country at heart, which reflects in my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing short stories when I was in elementary school, which led to poetry as a teen. Then life happened and I put writing on hold... until it grabbed hold of me again in my thirties.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I've always had a fascination with the paranormal. Most paranormal books that are currently out there consist mostly of vampires, wolves, shifters, fae, but usually not ghosts. So, since I'm a paranormal investigator and love the thought of ghosts, I decided to write my own ghost series. (And since I'm also a lover, I had to throw that element in, too.)
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is when someone says they loved reading my words. To have someone say they are 'fangirling' over me is just the best thing ever and no amount of money can compare to that feeling.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't have fans, I have readers—and as an author, they mean EVERYTHING to me.
What is your writing process?
I get a story in my head, write down the characters and their characteristics, as well as important facts I need to remember so I can carry them throughout the book/series, and then I just write. When I started the FOR ALWAYS series, I didn't have a clue how it was going to end, which is crazy, I know, especially when I signed a contract for three books and had no idea what two and three were going to consist of. But it all seems to just flow as I write. And if I get stuck, I step away and live the story in my mind for a while, letting it come to me instead of forcing it.
