Interview with Jayne Amanda Maynes

Published 2014-02-04.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read Science Fiction Fantasy, The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind, are examples, but by no means the limit. If it contains magic and swords it always sounds like a good read to me.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My computer. I have a couple different ebook reader programs as well as adobe to read PDF's. I've never thought of spending the money to buy an ereader.
Describe your desk
A little cluttered. It is where everything lands until I take the time to put it away.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Salt Lake City Utah. I guess feeling like I never really belonged in ways has influenced my stories, but I never really thought much about writing until I was over 50 and wrote a story about how I dreamed my life might have been if I could have just been me.
When did you first start writing?
I don't really remember a time when I didn't make up stories, but the first story I ever sought to have published was one that I came up with while talking to some friends online about how our lives might have been different if we hadn't hidden away who we knew we were back when we were children.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book I am working on now is about someone who was hidden away from the world for a time in such a way even they didn't know who they were. It is about witches and vampires and blood magic and elemental magic. It differs from other such books because I chose to define the rules for both blood and elemental magics and those who have access to them. It started out to be a short story but thus far has become 2 novels, I'm hoping that's all it will be.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Having someone tell me they really enjoyed the story and even learned to look at things a little differently because of the story.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything!!! I really do believe in people and believe that given the chance they will look for the best in others. I'm not naive enough to believe everyone will do what is right if it isn't the easiest thing, but most people will if they can see the rightness behind things.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are several, but I guess the top of the list would be Terry Goodkind, and Robert Jordan.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Sewing, making ornamental iron furniture, cooking, gardening.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The restroom.... No a couple months ago I wanted nothing more then to just give up and not get up again. My best friend died and it hit me very hard since I was already in a depressed state. It was in coming to grips with her death I realized I still had to go on and continue what her and I had started together. Her life has meaning because of all those who remember her and help make things better for others like her.

Friends! Those special people who are there when you need them. For me they were special because I didn't have many, and the friends I did have most of them became friends in my senior year of high school. Erin; the friend who had been there the longest, so smart and so willing to accept someone who was different from what most considered normal.
