Interview with Jos Artin

Published 2014-10-31.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing short stories and essays for over 30 years. My passion for reaching out to people and making a difference in the lives of those around me, combined with years of counselling and experiences, prompted me to write this series of books.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My methods and approach, combined with vital skills and techniques I developed over the lat ten years comes together in this book series. The first book is Project Life, which covers relationships, self-improvement, career success and finances. It's deliberately written to be easy to understand, and simple to implement.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've helped people have better relationships, more career success, improved financial situations and obtain levels of personal growth & self-actualization for decades. Three near-death experiences within a year prompted me to put all my methods and knowledge into this series of books - allowing me to touch more lives than ever before.

Being an independent author was an obvious choice to get my methods distributed as widely as possible.
What do your fans mean to you?
Their feedback about what a difference my work has made in their lives, is the reason I write. As long as I can reach out and touch people with my methods and approaches, I will keep writing to help more and more people. Their stories and success is my motivation!
What are you working on next?
In the first two books, Project Life for Men & Project Life for Women, I touched on the most important aspects of Relationships, Self-improvement, Career performance and Financial situations. My next books will be dedicated to each topic in much more detail, to cover these important aspects of our life more comprehensively.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wow, there are many. But I would say the one author who influenced me the most in my early life was O.G. Mandino. His book titled "The Greatest Salesman In The World" showed me how large the role of our mind-set is in determining our success or failure.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I work on my books with a passion to reach out and touch people. To me, that's the ultimate inspiration every day! My wife and children are obviously my biggest sources of inspiration, but my efforts to make a difference to others comes a very close second.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
A healthy mind needs a healthy body, so I exercise a lot: Playing squash, cycling and the odd round of golf does it for me. I love travelling, and spend as much time as possible in the bush. I am also a classic-car fanatic, which means I attend many race-events and car shows.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Very clearly: As a fifth-grader I wrote an short story titled "The 5 Thirteens" which won me a book-prize and full marks for English Literature. Even though English is my second language, I love to express myself in this language.
What is your writing process?
I have a notepad on hand at all times, into which I jot all the ideas which pop into my head. When one of these ideas strikes the right chord with me, I sit down and write a draft. If I feel the draft has potential (meaning I like it), I will progress it into a book. I tend to go into cave-mode, writing for days or even weeks on a manuscript. Then I take a clean break and review my manuscript later to assess its merits.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
As long as I can remember, I've been hooked on reading. As a child it was mostly Enid Blyton's works, some Readers Digest compilations and other fiction. I only started getting into non-fiction much later in my life, and that's where I found my true calling.
How do you approach cover design?
While I write my manuscript, I form a mental picture of what the cover should look like. To me, the cover is a reflection of the contents of my book, and I spend a lot of time and money to make sure that the artist gets it just right. It's almost as important as the book content, because it's the first point of contact for any potential reader of my books.
