Interview with Julian P. Flores

Published 2017-04-26.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a town called "Willow Glen" in San Jose, California. My experiences growing up in this area, as well as the history and landmarks of the surrounding Almaden Valley, directly formed the basis of the book. "Hicks Road: Jacob's Story" is based on a well known urban legend in the area.
When did you first start writing?
When I first set foot at my local library (Willow Glen Library), they had special book readings during the evenings with the fire place going; that sparked my writing and storytelling.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My wife told me "You should make a book about this".
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As an artist in general, I've always enjoyed doing things my own way and this gives me that freedom.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Offering a platform for independent artist like myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Just knowing I accomplished something and how writing puts you into that world that you create.
What do your fans mean to you?
Means a lot, without them I wouldn't be able to put out the book.
What are you working on next?
I love nothing more than suspense...
Who are your favorite authors?
Steven King has been very inspirational to me.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My beautiful wife, having my dog jump on me while in bed and gives me that look a look that says "Hey, get up and create man"!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Walk my dog, garden, fishing, art (mix media), wine taste, backpacking, and cooking.
