Interview with Kenya McCarter

Published 2015-03-30.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My passion for writing. Since the age of 8 I have written poems and short stories. I loved how adventurous writing allowed my personality to be. As the years past I begin to write stage plays and most recently my very first screen play. As I awaited this transition from stage to film. I thought it would be fitting to write my life lessons and pass them on to inspire others.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been very vital. It allowed me to be liberated in my efforts and taught me so much regarding publishing and distribution. I feel like an expert with Smashwords on my team.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy is expression. When writing inspiration pieces rather involving my life I feel empowering. Touching lives is what I live for. I love the fact that if there is a cultural issue that I'm able to use my gift and talent to either raise awareness or use it to raise funding for charitable causes I truly feel like writing is a God sent for me to do and leave my fingerprint upon this earth.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love my fans. They keep me motivated and searching within. I love to hear when a fan says reading your book or seeing one of your stage plays made me feel as though you were speaking directly to me or they feel like I gave a voice to their story. I'm humbled by it all.
What are you working on next?
My next project will be entitled. The Power of Love. This is my very own love story of how I betrayed and broke the heart of a man who loved me. And I fought to change my self sabotaging ways. And I fought for his forgiveness. It's a real story of unconditional love and how two people can actually work together and recover from a broken heart. It's the rebirth of friendship. I'm so excited! Just the thought of it has me all giddy.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh wow. Believe it or not. I love Terry McMillian, Stephen R. Covey, Jerome Dickey, Stephen King, Napolean Hill, Robert Greene oh I could go on and on. I love variety
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
It's the drive within I always feel as though each morning as I wake up and just give thanks I feel as though I've been giving another day to pursue my passion. Another day to get it right and do better than the day before. That is what gets me up and ready to go.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing. This is actually hilarious. Most times, I'm social surfing. What I mean by that is I;m engaging online and seeing what people are posting what matters to them. It just gives me real heart to heart to pour out in the strokes of my keyboard. And all other times, I'm enjoying life. I love dancing , margarita's and lavishing my pallet with as much yummy culture as I possibly can. For the first time I enjoyed Lebanese cusine. Oh I'm a fan now. (Giggles)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through Itunes, Google, Good reads and Barnes and Noble. I just recently subscribed to Scrib.
What is your writing process?
I think I shared with you early. I love to write about things that matter on a Social and cultural level. Like recently, it is as though I've been bitten by the relationship bug. All my writing has been centered on relationships. When my heart is the most vulnerable and I am my most empathetic self. I write the most heart felt compelling stories. And I guess you can say my process is passion. If the passion isn't present I hold off.
How do you approach cover design?
Depending on the detail of the story. What the book is about and I pull a visual from that and present it to my graphic artist hoping he is able to bring the vision in my head to life. I love for the cover to tell a story all by itself.
