Interview with Lilith Frost

How do you approach cover design?
I deeply studied what makes a cover marketable and appealing and now make covers I think look nice (and are genre appropriate). I've spent hours making covers for books I haven't written and may never write! Covers aren't just important, they're fun to make! I usually make two terrible ones, the shame over which haunts me, then miraculously come up with the perfect one.
What do you read for pleasure?
Queer romance, historical and contemporary, and omegaverse, mpreg. I'm glad it's taken off enough that I can now be picky over what kind I will deign to read.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle from the Bush administration that's still working just fine. I've been tempted by the newer waterproof ones, but I admire my ancient Kindle and refuse to replace it until it dies.
Describe your desk
I have now written two novels sitting on my Ghostbed with a lap desk, laptop, and Bluetooth mouse. One day I might have a desk! We'll see.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the rural southeast of the U.S. and I don't feel my growing up here noticeably influenced my writing, at least not that I'm aware of. Living here during the pandemic definitely gave me a cynical and angry edge that inspired my tone in Trials on the Hard Way Home. Of course, most of my loved ones did the right things during the worst of it, but enough people didn't, and were so vocal and shameless about it, I wanted to punch this whole part of the country in the dick.
When did you first start writing?
I was a tiny child. My first stories were written on notebook paper and stapled together at the margins. They all involved super powers and strong femmes.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just wanted to write and put it out there. Both approaches, indie and traditional, have massive amounts of side work and strife aside from the writing. Indie was the way to go since I feel I'm technologically literate, know how to use social media, understand how much marketing is involved, and wanted my stuff out there as quickly as I could make it and polish it up.
What are you working on next?
I have a sequel to my first already written (editing commences soon), then two more to wrap the series up. I want to move on to a standalone gothic, then eventually try my hand at omegaverse. I have tons of ideas, really!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Not being able to sleep any longer.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Cycling, watching TV, playing video games, BDSM, reading, spending times with loved ones.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I'm in a lot of Facebook groups that recommend things, for which I'm grateful because through them I've found so many wonderful stories.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I non-consensually read the book Socks by Beverly Cleary in first or second grade. It was about a cat that gets displaced by a baby. I rooted for the baby, and I believe I wrote that on my tablet paper with my super thick pencil.
