Interview with Maria Sigle

Published 2014-11-11.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
'Alice in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll, 'Killing Me Softly' by Nicci French, 'Fiona Range' by Mary Mcgarry Morris, 'A Moveable Feast' by Ernest Hemingway and 'The Holy Bible.'
What do you read for pleasure?
I typically read anywhere from 2-3 books every week. I'm slightly hyperactive, so what I'm reading depends on my mood. If I'm lying on the beach and I don't want to think too much, I will read a mystery or thriller. I also love anything historical, where I can actually learn something. I love to read anything about Abraham Lincoln, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Vincent Van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway and Sigmund Freud. I also try to read a little bit of the bible every week, as I believe that this is truly the coolest book ever written.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have found Facebook to be an amazing marketing tool as well as blogging.
Describe your desk
Organized chaos…No thats a lie…Its just disgusting.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Because I grew up and still reside in Middle America, I had to find alternative forms of entertainment. I love to travel to exotic and exciting places but when I'm stuck here during the winter months, I need some form of escapism. For me that is reading and writing books. I've actually got 3 books in the pipeline now.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I got the idea for 'Marley Parker', from my own life; in my twenties. I started out my career as an on-air television personality and part-time model when I was only 19 years old. During that time, I attended college full time and worked full time for a local FOX television affiliate as well as free-lance for an NBC affiliate. I also worked for a few modeling agencies in the midwest, where I did everything from swimsuit modeling, to print ads and infomercials. This was one of the most exciting times of my life, so it has definitely inspired me creatively.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm always up for a new challenge and this seemed like a good place to start. I really want my daughter (Jordan), to have a Young Adult series to read when she becomes old enough. When I was a teenager, I was fortunate enough to have the Nancy Drew series. I feel like now is a perfect time to introduce Marley Parker, especially in today's world where we have all become so desensitized. It is important to me to write about a strong young woman, who always sets a good example for young girls. I want 'Marley Parker' to inspire and serve as a role model.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When someone quotes me back to me…so cool!
What are you working on next?
I am working on 'A Rumor of Ghosts', the second book in the Marley Parker series; scheduled to be published in early 2015. I am also working on a fictional novel entitled, 'Fall from Grace.' It has been a very difficult story to tell and something I've been working on and researching for over 15 years now. It is dark and depressive and takes a lot out of me but I think its a phenomenal story. Last but not least, I'm working on a series of childrens books that are designed to ease night time anxieties in small children. With my 4 year old son Johnny at my side helping me, we have created; 'Once upon a very Stinky Christmas' and 'Once upon a very Stinky Halloween.' I can't help but laugh every time I say the titles. These books are designed to be read before bedtime and make children laugh hysterically at the off the wall stories they tell, thus taking away the anxiety of going to sleep and replacing it with humor. My kids are my inspiration!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My husband and my 2 children…and my Golden-Doodle Zephyr who refuses to let me sleep in.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love spending time with my family more than anything else in the world. My kids and my husband are my life. Staying in on a Saturday night with everyone piled up the sofa under blankets while watching a movie and eating popcorn is the best! I'm also an avid fitness buff. I love jogging, pilates, snow-skiing, water-sports, swimming and teaching water aerobics. Fashion, shopping and cooking are my other obsessions.
