Interview with David McNutt

Published 2014-03-29.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Southern California, in a lower income area. I always dreamed about becoming a published author. I began writing poetry as a child and young adult, but never had the patience, though I tried several times, to write a book. Then when I had the idea for 'Society's Fall' I decided to give it a go, and well, it pretty much wrote itself.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest published book is also my first. Strangely enough the idea came to me out of the blue with no noticeable inspiration.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I don't like the idea of book prices growing just because publishers and agents want to make more money. I think authors should decide what they want people to pay for their book, and I also believe they should get most of the money. Not because I am an author, but they did do most of the work. It is their baby after all.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smash words inspired me to reedit my first book and look into some better processing programs, which I have. I am currently in the process of making the second edition of 'Society's Fall', which will be up very soon.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The raw creative part. Where you lose yourself in this story, and it becomes a part of you. I absolutely DETEST editing, but alas it is a necessary demon.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Without them I am just writing, they are what determines the success of any author, or other type of writer.
What are you working on next?
Currently I am working on book two in the 'Survival Series', no name yet, but it will come. I am very happy with the direction of the series so far. Funny, I had no idea it would be a series until I was about three quarters of the way through 'Society's Fall'.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorites are definitely Stephen King, and Dean Koontz, for novels. My favorite poets/playwrites are Edgar Allen Poe, and Shakespear.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My writing, and the wife. LOL Seriously though it is my family, my animals and my dog, in that order.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time gardening and training my dog. He's a thirteen month old Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) and I love him as though he were my own son.
