Interview with Mina Kellin

What are you working on next?
I have quite a few projects up my sleeve. My first book, "Her Next-Door Doctor," was a short, not quite so complex way for me to test the waters of self-publishing and now that I've learned the ropes, I'm going to put some of my more engaging ideas into play. The first book in my romantic suspense series "Of Escorts and Virgins" is called "Stumble and Fall" and is coming out mid October. After that, of course, will come the rest of the series but I also am working on some erotic fairy tale retellings and a college romance that explores BDSM in the context of feminism.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh man, I have a lot of authors that I love. When I was in elementary school my friends and I were absolutely obsessed with the Percy Jackson series so Rick Riordan holds a special place in my heart. Other YA authors I love are Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Sherman Alexie and Marie Lu. My favorite romance and erotica authors are Charlotte Stein and Meljean Brookes. In terms of classics and "regular" literature, I like Haruki Murakami, Neil Gaiman, James Baldwin, Jane Austen and Stephen King.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Honestly? Food. Books also help.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm probably either reading or sleeping but, like most human beings with access to technology, I do enjoy the occasional binge watch of tv shows like Mr. Robot and Brooklyn 99. I also love traveling and eating at restaurants. I don't like to study but I do a fair bit of that too since I'm in college.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I just search for things I'm interested and find related shelves on Goodreads. I also will look at recommendations that pop up for me on ebook stores based on other things I've read. If something is trending, like "Fifty Shades of Grey" or Anna Todd's "After," I'll usually take a peek at it.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Well, I don't know for sure if it's actually the first one I wrote but it's the first one I remember writing. I think I was in second grade and we had an assignment to write a story. I basically just copied the plot from the Princess and the Pauper Barbie movie and then spent a ton of time drawing the pictures. I still have it and it's honestly hilarious. I've come a long way since then.
What is your writing process?
1. Feel guilty about doing other things beside writing
2. Make myself start working on one of my many story ideas (seriously, I have notebooks full of them)
3. Actually enjoy myself
4. Get snacks
5. Reread part of what I've written and feel ashamed
6. Doubt spiral
7. Force myself to get back in the saddle
8. Let the finished piece sit for a few days
9. Go back to edit and realize that a lot of what I've written is garbage but some of it is gold
10. Revise
11. Revise
12. Revise
13. Edit (which is different than revision)
14. Give to Beta reader
15. Publish
16. Cry
17. Go for a run
18. Eat takeout from my favorite restaurant
19. Take a break from the writing process to do college student things
20. Start all over
How do you approach cover design?
I actually have taken graphic design classes so I do my covers myself using Adobe Illustrator. Mostly, it's just trial and error. I work with a concept until I feel like it looks good and then I publish it. If I end up getting a better idea, I make a new cover and republish it. I like my covers to be a little more symbolic than the average romance novel cover with almost nude people in comprising positions. Don't get me wrong, I like to look at rock hard abs just as much as the next person but I also like to imagine the characters for myself which is kind of hard to do when the front cover slaps you in the face with a stock photo.
