Interview with Mandy Oviatt

Published 2014-06-24.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I enjoy writing. I love telling stories and sharing the people living in my head. And I have a high amount of respect for independent musicians, films, and authors, so I thought I'd become one myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy in writing is when my characters reveal hidden aspects of themselves to me.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean that someone cares about my stories. Knowing someone reads me makes me feel like it's all worth the work and hours I put into building my stories
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was called "Granny Grouch's Cottage," I was in fifth grade. It was published by my Elementary School's small publishing store: basically, Mom and dad paid $2 to get the cover.
It was about a mean old woman who worked at the grocery store.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love the Wheel of Time series. The layers of storytelling, foreshadowing and character development really draw me in.
I also love reading books like Rick Riordian's Percy Jackson series, the works of Karen Miller, K.M. Tolan, and Eric Johnson is a new author I've discovered.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a nook simple touch. All I need is an e-reader. I don't need fancy tablet apps.
Describe your desk
I work at a dining room table. I don't have a real desk, because of size in my apartment, but since we eat in our living room, the dining room table has everything I need to write. I keep a case of Dr. Pepper handy, and a chair at my side so my puppy can sit and "help" me write.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. Specifically in Gwinnett County/Stone Mountain/Snellville area. The biggest influence in my writing from my home has been an appreciation of foods and southern culture. I have to make myself call things "soda" instead of "coke" or use words other than "ya'll" at times.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Picking a favorite book is like picking a favorite dog, child, body part, or piece of your soul.
But If I had to pick only 5 books out of my home collection to say, run out of the house with if it were on fire?
1) A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson: It's autographed by the author.
2) Midnight Crossroads by Charlaine Harris: I just bought it and haven't read it yet, And it's autographed by the author.
3) Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: It's one of the first "Literature" books I ever read .
4) My fully bound copy of Lord of the Rings (all three books). It's been with me for years.
5). Whatever book I'm reading at that moment (As I write this, it is Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson)
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing since I was quite young. My aunt Julie recomended that I write out things that make me mad so I can express my emotions on paper.
That piece of advice has been with me every since.
