Interview with Patricia Ray

Published 2020-10-02.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm a screenwriter so writing is my life. But most of that work is commissioned. Writing my own stories and self-publishing them is very satisfying. It creates a space of my own for my imagination to run free. So the autonomy of creating is my main motivation. To write smut-romance is an important part of that autonomy. It was a great discovery when I wrote my first erotic story. It was a surprising but exciting experience. I got hooked and wanted to write more. So I set out a goal to write at least four stories for a series. That series became Stories From The Box. In Book 3 called "Carnal Knowledge", I've used my own experience as an erotic storyteller in a chat environment. I think that's where it all started for me before becoming a writer of erotica.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has enabled me to self-publish. It helped me to achieve the goal I set out for myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I find it exhilarating to live with my characters. They come into existence in an almost magical way. When they evolve and claim their right to be, I couldn't be happier. They surprise me, make me laugh and cry. It sounds odd but to me they are real. Another joy of writing is the puzzle of a narrative. I love figuring out how to construct a story and make it exciting for my readers.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everyone who appreciates my work is of great value to me. It keeps me going. Writing is hard work and nothing is more motivating than knowing people will enjoy the fruits of that labour.
What are you working on next?
I have two projects right now. One is called "Gabriella" which is a novelette I've started to write recently. The other is "Short & Sexy 2", a new selection of erotic short stories. I've written three so far, they still need editing, but I hope to publish this collection before the end of 2020.
There's also an older project called "Cathy, Lost & Found" that I've put aside for a while now. It's a short story that I never really finished. It keeps asking for a comeback, but I'm postponing it because I think it should be a novelette, maybe even a series. And I'm still in doubt whether I should start a new series.
Who are your favorite authors?
Being a fervent reader, my favourite writers change over the years, but there's a few I will never abandon. Paul Auster is one, Margaret Atwood another. Anaïs Nin is an all-time favourite. I've got a lot of Joyce Carol Oates and Julian Barnes in my bookcase too. In erotic-romance, I really like Lucy Felthouse's books, I enjoyed Alexa Riley's and Meghan March's and Nicole Edwards has written some really hot stuff too. On my Goodreads page, you can see what other favourites I have and what I'm currently reading.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life. It's just too beautiful, surprising, annoying, strange and magical to not indulge in every day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love walking with my dog and my partner. Shopping is a habit I cannot kick and you can find me in the kitchen a lot of the time. I'm a fan of Ottolenghi, I think he's a master of taste. Cooking relaxes me and nothing's more fun than preparing and having dinner with lovely company.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I love the advice of friends, I browse the internet (Goodreads!) and catch up with magazines and newspapers.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. I was 7. It was about a fox who helped two lost children find their way back to their parents.
What is your writing process?
Mostly I just start. I love how a character or story just pops up in my mind. I let it run free for a bit and then I stop. Then I think through the consequences of what's on paper. Depending on what the story's ambition is, be it long or short, I note down what a possible plot might be. With that, I continue writing. I edit a story often while writing. I regularly return to what's already on paper, evaluate and rewrite bits and pieces before I continue. I put work aside too so I can take some distance before rereading it. So, it's one step back, two steps forward.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I got the idea for The Pleasure Den after seeing a lot of women online exposing their bodies with photos and videos. Exhibitionism is a very arousing thing for many people. But I learned too that for many women it is empowering. Being proud of your body and showing it off to (often) anonymous people online, is sensual, sexual and a sign of strength. I thought this to be a great theme for the fourth book in the series Stories From The Box which is about people for whom being online is a way of life. Sometimes it overlaps real life, sometimes it stays confined within the virtual world. Either way, it is about expressing oneself as a person and as a sexual being.
How do you approach cover design?
Till now I've designed my covers myself. I always start by looking for a photo that fits the story. Then I assess if the picture needs editing, like cropping or colour effects to make it more attractive as a cover and make it fit with the overall design. For the first cover I made for Stories From The Box I designed a particular title and credit. It consists of a band with transparent letters for the title and the author's name in the same colour above or underneath it. I've continued to use this to create consistency in the series. I like that consistency a lot, so for now, I think I'll continue to use that design for all my covers, and just differentiating the fonts.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I've been using a Kobo for quite a few years now.
