Interview with Russell Baker

Published 2016-10-08.
When did you first start writing?
I dabbled with writing my whole life, but I published my first novel in December of 2016.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book is about Faith, Family, Friendship and American History, all wrapped in a blanket of adventure.
My mission for this first book in The O’Connor Chronicle series, The American Dream, is to tell the story of America and its founding in such a way that it will be relatable to the young reader. We want the reader to really get to know the exceptional patriots that paved the way for all of us to experience The American Dream.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Being an indie author gives me total control over the story, illustrations, and the whole book writing process. I appreciate the flexibility this affords me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords opens up doors to allow my books to be viewed by a wider audience.
What are you working on next?
After The American Dream, I am working on book 2 of The O'Connor Chronicles series. This book is called, Exceptional Americans.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, R.A. Salvatore, Richard Paul Evans, just to name a few.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time with my two girls and my wife. They keep me busy with so many activities, never a dull moment.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Often word of mouth is my primary source for books I read. If I am researching, I will dig for many sources to help me with that job.
What is your writing process?
I start with an idea and work on creating an outline. Once I have completed an outline I can put flesh to the bones of my story. Then it's tons of editing....editing....editing...
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. My first novel was The Lion, the witch, and the wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. It was the story that helped me fall in love with books.
How do you approach cover design?
I work with an illustrator and a cover design artist. I will give them rough ideas of what I want and they will come up with fabulous sketches based on those initial ideas. We work through this process until we have a final version.
Where did you get your ideas for this book?
I think God’s fingerprints are in every idea. I love history. I love America and what it stands for and the potential it has. I am sad to see that so very few kids grow up knowing or even caring about the history of this great nation.
What do you read for pleasure?
Yes I love to read.
What is your goal for the books you write?
My mission is to tell the story of America and its founding in such a way that it will be relatable to the young reader. I want the reader to really get to know the exceptional patriots that paved the way for all of us to experience The American Dream. It’s the potential that the youth of America have, that shouts a challenge to me.
How much research do you do?
It seems it is endless. I love the challenge, like piecing a puzzle together.
Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?
A book’s cover is the first thing a potential reader sees and it can make a lasting impression. Our brains are wired to process images faster than words. When we see an image, it makes us feel something. A great cover, can help the reader instantly recognize that this book is for them. Ideally, it entices readers to click on it or pick it up and read the blurb. A quality cover also shows you take your work seriously. If the cover is well done, it’s an indication the content within may also be of good quality.
How do you relax?
I love to read or go to movies. I love to play softball or hangout with my family.
What is your favorite quote?
I have several. Here are a few:

1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

Faith is not blind, but is the confidence based on the character and track record of God. - Jason Stonehouse.
