Interview with Sherry Reid

Published 2015-07-11.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love telling stories--always have! The greatest joy of writing is being able to connect with readers through those stories--those things that many of us have in common as told through the characters. (Love, lust, desire...most of us feel those things at some point or another.)
How do you approach cover design?
I don't do my own covers because I'm terrible at it! My approach to design is to find an artist, a creator, with whom I communicate well. My best bet is to let the artist know, "This is what I'm looking for and here are a few examples," and back off.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle Paperwhite--I've had it for a couple of years now and can't imagine life without it at this point! (My spouse bought one on my recommendation, in fact.) Absent the Paperwhite, I'll (grudgingly) read on my PC, but only because I have a comfy computer chair and two monitors.
Describe your desk
My desk is an absolute mess! I think it has a glass top, but it's been buried under so much stuff for so long now--papers, books, my favorite hat...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the South and still live here! (Southern United States, to be more specific.) Being part of this culture taught me a lot about Southern hospitality--we really do show you that we care by feeding you! Fortunately, I love to cook, so my door's always open--if not for dinner, then at least for dessert, which I love making!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Commercial publishing has been great to me--I've placed erotic stories in anthologies before--but I wanted to see what would happen if I branched out on my own. I knew, from feedback, that people love reading my stories, but I wanted to know if readers were willing to pay me a few bucks apiece for them. I also wanted to know if I could find great cover artists that could work with my grad-student budget (yes)...if I could consistently produce stories on something resembling a schedule (so far, I'm not great at that, but I'm working on it)...if I could continue enjoying the process even if I dealt with things in addition to writing and editing (yes).
What are you working on next?
More short erotica, I'm sure.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Selena Kitt, Jenn Trout, Stephen King, David Sedaris, and so many more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My spouse is the most amazing partner in the world. That's what gets me out of bed in the morning. (I'm not a morning person.)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love reading, cooking, playing with our cats, spending time with my spouse, and working my day job. I might also drink beer and play poker, but shh!
