Interview with Shu Daizi

Published 2019-01-07.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm kind of all over the place when I read. If you count audiobooks, I read a lot of history, classic literature, and science fiction, with a little fantasy thrown in for good measure. I like the broad scope when an author can build a world that makes sense, but if there aren't believable characters, it won't hold my interest
When did you first start writing?
I've written little pieces of fiction ever since I was a child. I think the first coherent short story I wrote was so long ago. It was about what happens to the world when a magical artifact is pulled out of an ancient tomb in the Himalayas. A pulse around the world caused mythical beings to be brought into existence. So, you've got each area's creatures: Yetis in the Pacific Northwest, leprechauns in Ireland, and dragons of all shapes and kinds all over the place. There was vampires and werewolves and everything else, too. Half disaster, half wish fulfillment? Yeah, it was pretty awful!
What are you working on next?
I'm nearly finished with The New Principal series, and I'm looking into a couple of different story options. One story I'm particularly interested will be playing with classical Chinese 'Stories of the Strange.' Many of them are quite racy even in their original form!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like the idea of a closer relationship with readers, and I think ebooks and platforms like Smashwords create an immediacy that the traditional market can provide.
What do your fans mean to you?
That's one of the best things about ebooks and the online community. Being able to hear feedback immediately from readers is such a delight. I find that even with erotica, the expectations of readers are quite high. I do my best to respect and value them, and the time and money they invest in the stories. The conversations I have with fans are the best way to understand and respond to those expectations. Also, of course, my readers are simply wonderful people. Not that I'm biased or anything.
