Interview with New Dawning Books

Published 2013-08-30.
When did you first start writing?
This interview is for Dee Dawning majority owner of New Dawning Bookfair

I wasn't always a writer/author. From 1973 'til 2008, I was a successful custom home designer/builder, having designed and built some 400 of the more noticeable homes in the Las Vegas and Phoenix metropolitan area.
Curiously, as if I had some subconscious premonition of the upcoming disaster that was in store for homebuilders (and myself), I started writing as a hobby in 2003. Not books at first, but more like music, book and movie reviews.
Reasonably good, well written stories started coming forth in December 2006 with my first book Fortune Cookies. In the ensuing years I've penned something like forty novels, novellas & short stories. Some I really love and some…well you be the judge.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Being Fiction, there really isn't a story behind the story. However, EEK! I'm a Woman, is rather different for me in that it is a Paranormal. Yes, it's a sexy, erotic romance, with some humorous almost hilarious elements featuring a call girl and customer, who after a round of hot strenuous sex going to sleep, wake up as customer and call girl. Yes it's definitely different for me. Of the fifty some books and stories I've written I can only think three beside EEK! that had Paranormal elements.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Two things, recognition and emotion. Recognition and appreciation from readers and the emotion I feel when I re-read tear jerking parts of my stories.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy fans. I do, but I really don't do enough to identify and curry fans. When someones says they've read several of my books it pleases me and when someone writes a five star review about one of my books it literally makes my day. So if any of you are fans let me hear from you! :)
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Well with me it wasn't that long ago. As I said my first book was Fortune Cookies, an Eppies finalist that was published in December of 2006
What is your writing process?
I'm a pantzer, like most writers I'm finding out. For those that don't know, pantzer means an author who writes by the seat of their pants writer. In other words, I start with an idea and run with it. This is as opposed to a plotter who pretty much lays the whole book out before they start.
How do you approach cover design?
Unlike most authors I make my own covers. In many cases, my covers are complete shorty after I start and heading my story as it's being written. This means the characters in the story are tailored after the characters on the covers
What are you working on next?
My current work in progress is (The) Ruthless Preacher, which is the second half of (The) Bastard Preacher, a book I published over two years ago. After that I plan to get back on several unfinished short stories.
Who are your favorite authors?
Since I became an author, editor, publisher, I've had very little time to keep up with my favorite authors. But when I read more I really liked Carl Hiassen' tongue in cheek humor. I like to think I'm a little like him. I also liked Michael Connelly, John Grisham, F. Paul Wilson, Dean Koontz and a passel more.
A little personal information.
Some wonder why, as a man, I write Romance. Why I don't write Action/thrillers or Suspense or Sci-fi/Fantasy. I do write other stuff, but Romance does well for me. Besides, I love the ladies—always have always will. I write about the fair sex because I admire them. Women are the glue, which hold society together. I even wrote a book about a woman who starts a women's party and runs for President—GIRL POWER–War on Women. It's a fun book. If you haven't read it, you should.

Now, for a little personal information. I've spent my entire adult life in the hot zone. First, Las Vegas and now Arizona. Yes, it gets a toasty, but the winters make up for it. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that most of my scribblings contain some fairly HOT scenes. No apologies, if you're honest, you'll admit that you like it steamy. And if you are one of the few, ice cubes who don't like to read about sex, you've been warned.
In closing I would like to say a little something.
I write for me, but I also write for you, the reader. I consider myself to be an entertainer--your entertainer. Some say, my books are written in a quirky, humorous vein, even the sexy ones. I guess that's true—I try to be different. But even with the serious books tongue in cheek humor can be found. That's why if you read one of my books, it's best if you have a quirky sense of humor to match my quirky sense of writing.
