Interview with Victor Gillis, Jr

Published 2015-02-08.
Q: WHAT IS THE MAIN THEME RUNNING THROUGH YOUR BOOK?
A situation can turn for the worst when someone lacks patience or rationality of clear thinking. The them of Trigger Happy is actually running through the majority of my characters. These are inner city youths who failed to resolve their issues through communication, and later faced the harsh consequences of their actions.
Q: WHY IS THIS MESSAGE OR THEME IMPORTANT?
Each year four out of five inner city youths will join gangs, affiliate themselves with drugs in some form or fashion, or commit robberies. An alarming percentage will be incarcerated or murdered needlessly. It's a cycle of destruction, and conflict resolution is much needed.
Q: IN ONE PARAGRAPH, DESCRIBE WHAT YOUR BOOK IS ABOUT.
Trigger Happy revolves around a young man and his efforts to break free from a life of crime and fast living, as he's faced with a series or murders and betrayals.
Q: WOW! SOUNDS VERY INTERESTING. CAN'T WAIT TO READ IT. HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BOOKS ON THE SAME SUBJECTS?
Honestly, some street-literature novels are watered down. Trigger Happy, on the other hand, is authentic. Anyone who knows or lived a criminal lifestyle will definitely co-sign that. I decided to give it to my dedicated readers raw and uncut, therefore, there's absolutely nothing far fetched in this novel.
Q: WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE?
What inspired me to write, was the long nine months i spent in solitary confinement. In the process of that I've read many urban novels. I love reading them because they remind me of the life I once lived. One of the novels I found interesting and realistic is called "The Coldest Winter Ever" by Sistah Soulja. With all the idle time I had on my hands I decided to pen Trigger Happy immediately after reading The Coldest Winter Ever. It's only right to say that Sistah Soulja inspired me to write. She's talented in everything she does. Shout out to Michael Whitby, too, author of "All Or Nothing".
Q: SO YOU DID SOME JAIL TIME?
And still doing it. At the tender age of 23 I received a term of 20-years to be served in federal prison and haven't been out since. I'm at the end of the road now, and with the help of the creator, I have made it through this bid successfully.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST OBSTACLE RIGHT NOW?
My biggest obstacle right now? Not knowing what to expect once I'm released. That's an obstacle for me because I'm constantly thinking about this every day, wondering what the future has in store for a African-American male who is 40-years-old with felonies on his jacket. I'm aware it's going to be a rough ride and that the world won't greet me with open arms. However, what will get me through these trying times is what I've developed over the years... Patience.
Q: YES. PATIENCE WILL BE DEFINITELY NEEDED. WHAT IS YOUR HEROIC DOWNFALL? YOUR ACHILLES' HEEL?
I like to give. I give so much that at times, I feel like I'm being taken advantage of. That's just me, though. I have a big heart and would give anyone my last.
Q: IS TRIGGER HAPPY A TRUE STORY?
Not at all. I was just blessed with the ability to make realistic stories, but I'm pretty sure that Trigger Happy is based on someone's life out there.
Q: HOW WILL SOMEONE BENEFIT FROM READING YOUR BOOK?
By seeing the criminal lifestyle for what it really is through the eyes of my characters. My readers will be well entertained, and at the same time, will have a strong sense of a lifestyle they will have second thoughts being apart of....
Q: WHEN WILL TRIGGER HAPPY BE RELEASESD?
In the first week of March
Q: NOW, LET'S TOUCH ON RAW'S COMMITTEE, WHICH IS CURRENTLY OUT RIGHT NOW. I'VE READ IT, AND I MUST SAY, IT SEEMS LIKE A TRUE STORY. IS IT?
No, it's not, but I'm flattered my story felt real to you. It shows you were really into it, and to have my readers captivated
by my stories is my primary goal. It should be all writers' primary goal.
Q: ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS, WHO GOES BY THE NAME "THRILLER" IS ONE OF THE SMOOTHEST GUYS I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING INTRODUCED TO. HOW DO YOU DEVELOPE SUCH STRONG, REALISTIC CHARACTERS?
I guess that comes from years of practice. If you work hard on your craft, you will eventually master it. It becomes second nature after a while. Also, I've come across men like Thriller, Slick, T-Re and women like Katana, Zina and Sweet. Where I'm from, they're in my everyday life. They're all around me.
Q: WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Brooklyn, New York... Born and raised. I'm the only American out of all my siblings. My parents were born in a country located in South America named Guyana.
Q: REALLY? I HEARD OF THAT COUNTRY. IT'S NOT TOO FAR FROM TRINIDAD, WHERE MY PARENTS WERE BORN. CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS A LITTLE BIT ABOUT RAW'S COMMITTEE?
Raw's Committee was actually the first novel I ever wrote. Raw's Committee chronicles a resilient woman, raised in Brooklyn, New York, who struggles to make ends meet until she crosses path with a man who eventually shows her a life she never knew existed. She also finds out that she a.... Na, I can't give the readers too much. That might spoil everything for them.
Q: WHY IS WRITING IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Q: WHY IS WRITING IMPORTANT TO YOU?
It's a way for me to convey my message, release what's on my mind. It soothes me to a certain extent. This is one of the most positive, legit thing I've ever done in my life, besides opening up a hole-in-a-wall restaurant before I came to jail. This is important to me because this is one of the ventures I'm depending on to give me a new lease on a positive and constructive life. I have a few books and I'm currently working on my eight movie script. Only time will tell how far I can go with this.
Q: YOU WROTE MOVIE SCRIPTS ALSO? I HOPE YOU WROTE ONE FOR RAW'S COMMITTEE BECAUSE THAT WILL DEFINITELY MAKE A GREAT MOVIE.
As a matter of fact, i did. It's currently registered with the Writers Guild of America (east). I'm doing some finishing touches on "City Of Bloodshed", the movie script to my second novel Trigger Happy.
