Interview with Kingsley Adrian Banks

Published 2021-03-05.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I spend my time reading novels, surfing through social media, and watching TV shows. They're great for me to learn about other people and other cultures around the world. I do spend time learning as well.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yeah. It was titled "Harvest". It was about a young lady who married her childhood friend and after the wedding, her entire life fell apart. I wrote it when I was fourteen, then I burned it because a literary editor I showed it to did not believe I wrote it. I was devastated.
What is your writing process?
I am a fly-by-the-seat panster. An incurable one at that. I can't really plot. I just have a story idea, then I run with it. In the last novel I wrote I did however plot my main characters only, fleshed them, from age and height, down to what they hate and like for dinner. Asides that, I start a story and the story pretty much continues flowing under my fingers, literally molding and working itself until it's finished.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Do I really have favorite books? There have been so many beautiful books, written by so many great authors I've read and loved. But I'll try to mention five.

Carrie, by Stephen King. It's the first book he wrote, the first I read, and my favorite work of his till date. He did amazingly well with that novel.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Husseini. That book was beautifully written and extremely depressing, I won't lie.

She by Henry Rider Haggard. I couldn't get over the shock of that novel for weeks after reading it.

A Glimpse of Stocking by Elizabeth Gage. Such a haunting tale.
What do you read for pleasure?
Fiction, and a bit of non-fiction. I generally prefer hefty novels of over 100k words. Those are my favorites. Robert Ludlum knows how to churn those kinds of novels out.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My mobile phone. I live in Nigeria, so you'd hardly get e-reading devices here, save for phones and Tablets.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Predominantly social media, listing my work on my blog and having them distributed across multiple platforms.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria. To be honest this location didn't influence my writing much. The area that Influenced my writing is Lagos.
When did you first start writing?
Age 14. That's pretty much young, I agree. Haha.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's Women's fiction, about a young woman who's weathered many storms to get to the top of her career as a musician. I also looked at patriarchy, spousal domestic abuse and marital relationships, all within the Nigerian context.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It was extremely difficult to get publishers to accept my work. My debut work was Gay fiction, with men having affairs and all that. Nigerian law criminalized homosexuality years ago. No publisher in Nigeria would touch that. And I wanted to get my work out there, so I took the indie route. Surprisingly, the book was well received and people keep reaching out to me about it till now. Makes sense, for me.
