Interview with Alva Williams

Published 2015-11-04.
What is your writing process?
First I find out my topic, then I pray and ask God to give me the words and then I will wait a day or two, while thinking about the direction I'm going in. Then I will sit down at my computer and start, praying once again. I tend to pace a lot, look out the window as I roll words around in my head. When I come to a dead end, I'll lay down, cook, watch T.V. all the time my mind is still working on the writing project at hand. It may sound weird but that is my process.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Oh the first story that I read and loved was "Pippi Long Stockings" I remember my mother taking me out to get shoes and the whole time I was in the backseat reading that book, I was young when I fell in love with reading.
How do you approach cover design?
Well, I kept it simple and used my own photo, no copyrights infringement to worry about.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love a variety of books, there is not one in particular that I can think of.
What do you read for pleasure?
Yes I do, but not as much as I would like too. When I was younger, I read all of the time day and night, as an adult, I read when I can, but I still read daily.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Google play store and amazon.com, but I prefer good old fashioned book.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm just starting out so I will come back to that question
Describe your desk
Its big brown and black with a computer screen, printer and clock on it, but it is comfortable for typing.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Boston and my surroundings had an impact on my writing, but more so by the people that I met along the way and their stories and requests for poems to be written.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing at about age 14, it started out as something to do to take my mind off of life, then it became a hobby.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my book of poetry, some of the poems are my life experiences, some are fictional and some are poems written to help others through pain in their lives and some are poems requested by others for themselves.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been writing for so long and I just don't want my gift to be stuck up under a desk. I wanted to get my words out to others in hopes that they minister to someone and also, to leave a small part of myself in the world when I leave to be with God.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
This is my first time using Smashwords so we will see....
