Interview with Ankur Mutreja

Published 2015-08-29.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Short answer to this question would be Self-Satisfaction. But I don't think I am doing justice to this question by writing such a short answer; so, I would recommend you to visit my blog post "Why I Write" ( at http://shared.ankurmutreja.com/misc/why-i-write/) to get a comprehensive answer to this question.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Recently, I have authored three books almost simuntaneously. In fact, I would be wrong to say I wrote them because all I did was modified my earlier book "Writings @ Ankur Mutreja" and derived three new books from it dealing with three different genres, i.e., Humour, Law-Opinions, and Philosophy, and named them "Sparks", "Flare" and "Light" respectively. The basic idea in all my books is the same; i.e., to present my views in a consolidated form of a book distributed free of cost, which views are anyways in the wild in the form of my blogs accessible from ankurmutreja.com.
What are you working on next?
I have not decided yet, but, yes, I am always writing blogs; so, updates from my blogs in the form of new books would definitely follow (mostly free). I like travelling. If ever I get time, I will do a comprehesive travelogue of selected Indian travel locations -- I think I will have to price it for it will require substantial expense of time and money. I may also author fiction either as a collection of short stories or a novel; but, at present, my mind is blocked towards fiction.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in the year 2003, just after exiting my well paying investment banking job. This is the first thing I thought of, probably because that's what I had been doing the most in my job -- albeit negatively at the end of it, as an exit-interview/feedback against my boss, which incidentally never happened, for my boss pre-empted me by asking for my resignation.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I always knew I was selling my books free for the time being, for I am professionally engaged as an advocate in India, where advocates are barred from engaging in other professions without special permissions -- since I am not making any profits from my books, I need not take those stupid permissions. Anyways, even otherwise, I believe in free flow of information and didn't want to put a price tag to my writings, which are anyways available on my blogs free -- OK, I am also immodest enough to think my writings are priceless. So, the choice was easy for me; I don't think any traditional publisher would have been willing to sponsor my books and sell them free of cost on its distribution channel -- Smashwords is doing a great job there.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
In fact, most of my time is spent in court rooms making arguments, for I am an advocate by profession and a writer by choice (which choice I exercise best at bed time before and during sleep: I dream a lot). But, let me advise you there is more fiction in court rooms than in Hollywood/Bollywood crime thrillers, so I am well fed with my daily dose of fiction.

In a borderless world, all would be travelers. India is a mini borderless world, and Kerala lies at its southernmost tip. Price: Free! Words: 17,850. Language: English. Published: July 19, 2015 . Categories: Nonfiction » Philosophy » Political, Nonfiction » Philosophy » Social
What is Philosophy? Does it originate in the minds of professors like a Ganges flowing out from the hair-locks of "Lord" Shiva? Or is it rustic and puerile, evolving into maturity through the experiences of common men. I started writing philosophy without realization. To start with, it was an outlet to project my frustration, but those ramblings matured into Philosophy; & here I share it with you.

Opinions are like flare, which can turn either way: they can spread like wild fire or encapsulate themselves within the bounds of personal integrity, and thus illuminate. Recently, I published a comprehensive book of my writings entitled "Writings @ Ankur Mutreja", and the present book is a short selection of my opinions presented therein with emphasis on responsible writing.
Sparks: Satire and Reviews
Price: Free! Words: 16,320. Language: English. Published: July 17, 2015 . Categories: Nonfiction » Entertainment » Humor & satire » Form / trivia
This book is an alternative representation of my thoughts, comprising four chapters: Satire, Book Reviews, Travel Locale Reviews, and Movie Reviews & More. The Satire chapter is a humorous take on societal idiosyncrasies and hypocrisies, and the next three chapters on Reviews are some time serious, sometime light; but overall it is indeed a light reading, especially for those who are tight on time
