Interview with Bev Walton-Porter

Published 2016-09-02.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly nonfiction. I enjoy fiction, of course, but I'm very picky about the fiction I read. When I read nonfiction, I typically read books about science-related subjects, such as quantum physics, psychology (particularly forensic or social psychology), essays, biographies/memoirs, and writing-related reference books.

When I read fiction, it's usually paranormal, paranormal romance, horror, suspense, or humor. Weird combo, I know!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media has been amazing when it comes to marketing. Facebook and Twitter especially. I also use Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube, my websites, and my blogs, of course.
Describe your desk
My husband and I live, work, and travel in an RV full time, so my desk is usually in the back of the RV where our bedroom is. I call it my Boffice (Bedroom+Office). On occasion, I work elsewhere, depending on where we are located and what WiFi and accommodations are available. When we are in town, I'll work at my daughter's place. I also enjoy hanging out in coffee shops with my husband or at 24-hour eateries like Denny's or IHOP. Basically, if I have a WiFi connection, I'll use it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up a military brat, and this had a HUGE impact on my life and writing. Since I lived in different states and overseas for three years, I was around people from different countries, cultures, ethnicities, and belief systems. This influenced my writing by expanding the scope of my knowledge and learning more about people and their personalities in general—which is invaluable when it comes to creating characters and writing about them and their motivations.
When did you first start writing?
Hmmm...the first short story I wrote was in 6th grade and it was about a Mako shark. I'm obsessed with sharks and I chose to write about one. My teacher, whose first name was Lucy but whose last name escapes me, told me I was a good writer. That encouraged me and I continued to write even more.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am pursuing further education in Forensic and Social Psychology, so I take a lot of classes. In addition, I am also a gamer, crocheter, traveler, reader, autodidact, and polyglot. Learning takes up a large amount of my time, and I can never get enough of it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is in progress and it deals with the paranormal. The title is Living A Paranormal Life: Experiences With The Other Side. I founded a paranormal investigation group over a decade ago, and my husband and I are co-team leads of Colorado Springs Paranormal Association (C.S.P.A.). This book is based on true-life experiences with the paranormal that I've had over the course of my life (over five decades). In addition, I address the idea of what is—or isn't—paranormal and how hard science and psychology should be essential elements when you are dealing with or discussing the implications of the paranormal.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I started out as a traditional author, but I quickly discovered I wanted more control over my books. I also wanted more royalties from my sales. Selling a book for $12.99 and only earning 10% of that price was a big disappointment. I wanted to cut out the middlemen (and women) and deal directly with the reader. Thankfully, Smashwords allows me to do that. I love this platform.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Connecting with readers from all across the world, from different cultures, countries, experiences, and lifestyles. If I can make someone think, feel, or consider what I've written, then that's the best reward I could hope for.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many! Some of my favorite ones are Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, David Sedaris, Mary Roach, Jon Ronson, Anne Rice, Michael Crichton, Amanda Hocking, JK Rowling, Christopher Moore, Tom Robbins, Ann Rule, Joe Hill, Elizabeth Gilbert, and others. There are far too many writers and books I enjoy to list all of them.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Living life. No day is the same, and each day is a new chapter in the overall story known as your life. Since I don't know what will happen, what I will discover, and what experiences await me, I am eager to find out.
