Interview with Bryan Koepke

Who are your favorite authors?
Ernest Hemingway, CJ Box, Stephen King, James Salter, and Raymond Chandler.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life and the pursuit of happiness. I have a full life and much to do each new day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a full-time job in addition to my writing career. On the weekends I hike, ski, fish and go for ATV rides in the mountains of Colorado.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I'm constantly researching new books, and often times try samples on my iPad off of Amazon.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not entirely, but I was one of those kids in grade school that loved it when the teacher said "get out 2 sheets of paper and a pencil and write a story".
What is your writing process?
I write in the mornings 4-5 days a week. I begin with a concept for a book, writing until I have 10 or more chapters. Then stop to put a synopsis of each scene / chapter into an outline format for later reference. I use the outline mainly once the first draft is completed to help organize the plot and spot holes. For my current book I did many rewrites trying to make the story fuller and more complete with each one. I also spent time with a freelance developmental editor to flesh out later versions of the novel.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One of the Hardy Boys Novels. I loved those books.
How do you approach cover design?
I used a professional cover designer and would not hesitate to use them again. I love the cover we came up with for Vengeance.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I once owned a Kindle, but left it on an airplane. I now have an iPad mini and like it just as much as the Kindle. I also do some reading on my smartphone.
Describe your desk
I have a queen ann style desk in my basement office. The bulk of it is taken up by my iMac, but there is a black and white laser printer to the left of the mac, and pictures of my lovely wife to the right. I have several sets of book shelves and a filing cabinet to the left. I also have a mounted 9 foot long Marlin fish on the wall to the left of my desk. I caught the fish while on a vacation to Cabo San Lucas Mexico in 2009. The room doubles as my man cave.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Early on I saw a newspaper article about a black widow type woman and the idea for the character Crystal took hold. From their I wrote 150 pages of backstory detailing the life of Al Culver. Next I began with Reece Culver the main character of the book and devised a plot. The book is basically 3 stories that interweave together and provide the depth of the plot.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always enjoyed writing and after querying agents for half a year I decided it was time to start my own publishing company, Writers Cabin Press, Ltd. and take the plunge.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provides a great benefit to authors by offering them a place to upload their books and distribute them to multiple markets. This is especially valuable because writing novels takes time and Smashwords allows the author to spend their time writing instead of worrying about distribution.
