Interview with Chris de Villiers

Published 2016-01-15.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first article for an outdoors magazine in 1993, and in the following years I wrote more articles for different magazines. My first e-book, written in Afrikaans, was published in 2013.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is the story about a bicycle journey that I undertook in 1993 to a region in the north western part of South Africa, known as the Richtersveld. To my knowledge I was the first to do a solo, unsupported trip by mountain bike to that area.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sharing my experiences and my knowledge, and playing with words.
What are you working on next?
I have not decided yet, but it will probably be another non-fiction book. I'm not sure if I could write a novel yet; maybe at a future time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a self-employed electronics engineer, specialising in electronic product development, mostly for overseas clients. I try to work "normal" 8 to 5 hours, Monday to Friday.
What is your writing process?
Probably not very efficient! I often suffer from so-called "writer's block", so I generally avoid trying to finish one chapter after the other. Instead, when I remember something or get an idea, I work on that while the motivation is there. Later, I would place that bit of work in an appropriate chapter. Of course, with a book such as The Road Winding Among the Mountains, which is basically a travel log, I could define the chapters beforehand, based on chronological order and places visited.
How do you approach cover design?
So far my covers included photographs relevant to the subject matter, but this will not always be the case. I use the open source program called Inkscape to create an image of the correct size, then I add some background colour (or a photo for the background), the main image, the title and my name. This is saved as a .svg file and exported as a .png file to be uploaded to Smashwords when I publish my book.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly non-fiction. My reading interests range from science to war. On the fiction side, I often re-read books by my favourite authors - John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, John Irving and a few others.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Software called Calibre, on my laptop.
Describe your desk
Cluttered!
