Interview with Daniel Gonzalez

Published 2019-10-06.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a much longer project next. I wrote a very short draft in 2016 before I completed The Shadow From The Deep and I've been waiting to work on it properly ever since. Don't wanna say too much. It's certainly darker.
Who are your favorite authors?
Favorites are Cormac McCarthy, Joyce Carol Oates, Jim Harrison, Jeff Vandermeer, and Ernest Hemingway. I think those are me favorites.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Active in the Greater Los Angeles audio scene. Works in audio book publishing and freelance editing, producing, and writing. Otherwise I'm a movie and imrpov comedy fan. Plus I garden. Plus I travel.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I'm not even sure. I used to write and draw books on marine life in elementary school. Little two page spreads on, among other things, how big giant squid can be. Only the most important facts, clearly.
What is your writing process?
Usually when I'm in the throes of editing one project I'm antsy to move onto the next, which I'm so excited about that I can't wait to be done with the dreariness of editing the current project.

First I'll write without any sort of plan. As I get words down on the page, I start seeing what the story is gonna look like. I prefer to work in episodic stories, so I can work in more contained "chunks."

Revisions, rewriting, and editing takes a long time. I work better when I see what I didn't get right the first time, because then I'll know what I need to do. Basically, for what I "write" in a week I'll "edit/rewrite" for the next four to eight weeks. And I work pretty much every day.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No idea. Supposedly my father read to me the entirety of Jurassic Park and The Lord of the Rings. But I don't know if he did that... Those are some long books for him.
How do you approach cover design?
Cheaply. I hardly know what to describe to an artist for what I want. Whenever I try hiring someone for cover design I'm terribly disappointed. I like grabbing 19th and 18th century (or older) art pieces for my covers now. This does require a lot of hunting.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
In no particular order:

Blood Meridian and All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy.
Black Water by Joyce Carol Oates.
The Dark Tower by Stephen King.
A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway.
What do you read for pleasure?
I tend to read more literary books, but I do occasionally go for something more genre-y. I'm currently in love with The Witcher series by Andrej Sapkowski. Joe Lansdale is a grimy, pulpy love of mine. I'll also pick up modern-era western writers, like Louis L'Amour and Elmore Leonard.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I prefer the interface and simplicity of iBooks.
