Interview with Duncan R.M. Ferguson

Published 2020-04-09.
What is your writing process?
Primarily will ignite initially with inspiration from a myriad of sources: personal experiences(recent or past which of course involve 'first hand' interactions with female interests), listening to music(mostly rock & blues-KOCI & KJZZ are my faves), watching news with some bizarre or inspiring newsfeed, watching movies i.e. a write/song just came to me while or after watching "Girl" movie from 90s.
Also a major factor which surpasses surface sensory perception, which is either a prime inspiration or intertwined within fabric of a write, is Scripture, The Word, which I glean from the KJV which I find more eloquent and descriptive, after years of absorption and daily reading. Other times will be from books I've read throughout life, Jack London, Joseph Conrad etc also since I've absorbed so much musically, I'll be inspired by lyrics, sometimes even quoting them within a write, which I make sure to add quotations and reference the band or lyric writer.
So a couple of lines may just come to me, or a whole stanza, which I then just craft into or follow it's structure like trudging in direction of flow along the bank of a stream or river such as the curvy hwy 12 in ID-Lewis & Clark route or the Bear River in Evanston WY or that really winding stretch flanked by shadowed imposing canyon walls at times dripping icicles like stalacites on the 70 of the Colorado, then is really cool when encounter confluence from another river(like the clear Thompson into the muddy Fraser) or bristling brook, then as spans out in delta providing wet grasslands, sandbars, and a symphony of various creatures that become symbiotic players in the scape, or as the band 'Heart' says, "the song is the master."
Other times is a phrase which I adopt or twist into my own unique title or sometimes I'll double check online and see if isn't already a title, but other times I don't care if it is, because I know whatever I'm writing is original, not copying or the incriminating plajerizing.
Of course, either way, like Bob Seger who I saw in concert on his 35th birthday says, "10% is inspiration, the other 90% is work."
I.E. after a couple of lines or even say a complete 4 line stanza just enter my mind usually very quickly, though sometimes I'll do what I call let it stew or brew for a couple of days even before pen hits the paper. I then have to work at it, crank out corresponding verses, sometimes first or other times I'll just know I have to construct a bridge or break, usually after a couple of stanzas(this holds true if is or starts as a song or lyric)
But other times if is more a free form, I'll just let it flow, sometimes anticipating an end rhyme, other times just buffet flow of wings whilst always under the shadow of His Wings i.e. Psalms 17:8, 31:1, 36:7, 57:1, 63:7, 91:4 , with desired content/expression and then decide of an appropriate end rhyme. Though I must admit It does work better to think ahead of an end rhyme, then build content into it, using end rhyme like a capstone or sometimes called a porcap, as I worked construction/framing before in late teens, and early 30's at a building supply yard in HB, but let's not forget "The Cornerstone" i.e. "the Stone the builders rejected was peradventure the most important stone of all." i.e. Psalm 118:22, Luke 20:17, Matt.21:42, Acts 4:11, 1Peter 2:6 Note: I also do parodies of songs which in no way means I don't like the song, I really do, and respect the crafter(s) of such ditties. I.E. "Mr Brownstone" by GNR becomes "we've been dancing in the fire with Mr. Cornerstone, He stands at the door and knocks-but'll respect ya if ya wanna be left alone." OR "Spoonman" Chris Cornell/Soundgarden becomes "Crossman- they nailed Your Feet n' Hands- You saved me!-now I'm together with God's plan...all my new friends are Christian-all my old friends're ODed n' deadpan."
Sometimes I'll think of 2-4 end rhymes ahead of content, and write them in the margin or top o' page. That being said I'm big fan of rhyming, usually 'true rhymes' but occasionally ones that sound close. Sometimes, say in a free form, I'll write a line with an end rhyme on the back burner, then cram with a several lines of content, sometimes with inner rhymes or sometimes not, then lead up to end/punch line with end rhyme, which I usually enjoy adding on what marvellous maiden of the quill-Paloma Positano coined as my "signature twist."
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I'd say Dr. Suess books had a big impact on me, as I started reading when I was like 4 by my Mom. She was suggested to try teaching to read by a doctor, as I was extremely hyperactive, referred to as ADD now. I think the rhyming prose of Dr. Suess(who ended up just down the road in La Jolla, CA) had an effect or set a precedent on my writing style. I also give credit, and had chance to thank my mother while still alive, for having the wherewithal and extreme patience, to teach such a tasmanian devil like terror to read so young.
How do you approach cover design?
Well I've only done one book, though I've amassed quite an amount of material over years.
So current book was/is: Memoirs Of A Dark Warrior, so through search with help on cover design, I found ebook launch and worked with Dane(as a child I had a great Dane dog named "Dane")
Using ready made template as example, I coached on what I wanted cover to look like, which would fit title, and character I was attempting to convey. I also suggested adding an original sketch lightly in background, though is usually not suggested, Dane thought looked good with cover and theme of book. I asked him in his professional opinion, so I agreed to keep it. I also requested & they included in formatting a full visible copy of sketch at back of the book.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. "The Bible" as Pnuemestos + 66/40, as is the living Word, 100% non errancy in prophecy, shows flawed weak mere human beings that God chooses and emboldens. KJV is my preference as more poetic.
2. "Call Of The Wild" Jack London- fave line theme, "the law of club and fang." Portays the intermingling of man vs. nature, but alas "the call" baser but pure nature prevails.
3. "Heart Of Darkness" Joseph Conrad- (movie "Apocalypse Now" based on) shows twisted descent into megalomania and insanity of Colonel Kurtz, then shows the way gov'ts deal with one's gone rogue, and the gray ambiguous feeling of the Captain's mission to "placate/eliminate the target."
4. "Cannery Row"- John Steinbeck. I chose this story as set in Monterey, CA which is upscale area incl. Carmel by The Sea("Clintville") but portrays a seedy underbelly of town and lesser known occupants, over more well known books as "Grapes Of Wrath" or "Of Mice and Men."
5. "Equus" by Peter Shaffer, though twisted, disturbing even, I liked the takeaway of psychiatrist(played by Richard Burton) after abreacting which in psychotherapy means "to remove a suppressed desire", he reevaluates himself and his mundane predictable existence holidaying in south of France, and almost shows a form of buyer's remorse, in taking away the object and fervency of worship of his patient.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Though browse, don't really read full ebooks, however primary device I utilize is Samsung S-7 Black Onyx(I don't really like I-phones with incessant security locks-ah y'all use passwords anyway don't ya? Or credit info only shows last 4, so...? Ur naughty pics're nothing we ain't seen b4, n' likely fairly unexciting)
Other than S-7, I use Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8" 2019-T290, but pretty much just for watching Prime free movies.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Well I've paid for review onlinebookclub.org took like 4 months to do, so far no results.
I think Amazon shuffles books to backburner after 90 days, so not much there.
Probably Smashwords has yielded most results in getting book out there. But is not readily profitable, other than getting book to readers, as biggest results have been on discount sales or free giveaways. I.E. I opted for 100% free 3-20-2020 thru 4-20-2020 on Smashwords "give back" due to COVID-19 note: "Mindin' The Store" about see:

But making $ or profit was not my intent to publish anyway, perhaps I had an ulterior motive, but not grisly or diabolical. But more to not only enrich and entertain, but to plant seeds of Gospel message mixed in with my checkered past and fleshly escapades, but Scripture does say "be crafty as a serpent, but harmless as a dove."
Describe your desk
My "desk" isn't really a desk at all.
But wherever inspiration strikes, such as in semi work truck, scrawling away in condo sleeper, does have a pullout "desk" from bedside, even with ability to raise surface and keep things, paper and writing utensils in drawer.
"Home"? well is actually a 26' class A RV I'm blessed enough to have parking/storage about a mile from beach/Pacific ocean. Is quiet at night anyway, when business and daytime workers aren't nearby. But in daytime I generally keep AKG headphones on with my fave radio stations- KOCI, or on wkds-KKJZ "nothin' but the blues."
Both are inspirational musically, and I also listen alot primarily very early AM dozing until around noon to KKLA, which has various pastors teaching from The Word. Then I at least do devotions by reading/meditating on Psalms and Proverbs per day #, and say after 31 days in Psalms, I just continue daily with 32 all way up to 150. It does have an effect, esp. can be seen as I loosely translate in part or whole subject/theme. So my "desk" is wherever I am, sometimes when travelling I wake up, and have to do quick checklist of where I am. "Where's that confounded"-desk? Spinoff of end ramble of Led Zeppelin song.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
So was thinking 'bout that other day-though born in Vancouver B.C. Canada, I grew up in suburbs/cities outside Vancouver like Richmond, Surrey, then many years I was way up just off the Fraser River in small town Hatzic, means in Indian-Nootka? "bend in the river" We had a very old & large 3BR 2 story with attic & fireplace 100 yr old well built house, 1 acre of land with huge oak and maple tree, and a mulberry bush, also with an above ground pool I almost lived in it in the summer. There were fields nearby with horses which we rode bareback sometimes, cows, even a large bull I would taunt then being hyperactive and a flash of a runner, I'd scamper up on a large rock to escape gouging and trampling, much to the amazement and awe of my friends, neighbors, and sisters watching in relative safety from other side of fence.
We'd also go up the hill to graveyard to scare ourselves(I wrote about some of this as "Was This The Dream?" in my book), but also to visit nuns at convent across the street, only through a door/window though. There was also a monastery where we'd go on Christmas midnight mass, and other times to visit Father Basil, our family became lifelong friends with. Father Basil was a cool priest, he drank with my Dad sometimes, gave us double album of "Jesus Christ Superstar", and my 3 sisters and I really got into. I also went to Sunday School my mother actually taught.
I was quite athletic, having alot of energy, I played baseball/hardball 4 years, both my parents coached at times(I started in right field then up to pitcher in championships). I also played ice hockey organized league, having started ice skating fairly young about 6 or 7. Later in my late teens, a group of friends and I would rent rink to play casual hockey, which involved drinking/fighting after. I got the traveling bug young, going on business trips with my Dad as far up north as Whitehorse Yukon, Kamloops, and Skagit Alaska even. I had learned to drive a car coached from about age 5 or 6 sitting on Dad's lap steering. By time I was big enough to stretch my legs to the pedals, he allowed me to back out the driveway with: Chysler Newport and Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, and later the Ford Thunderbird with suicide doors. I also had a Keystone minibike was quite wild on, but my friend crashed into our stone well.
But when I was around 12 my parents divorced, then I chose to live with my Dad who was promoted to national sales manager at a winery, then we moved back east(I steered 747!)Mississauga, suburb of Toronto. I started playing drums then. But I was still good in school, not having started drugs yet. We had a little informal rock band, the guitarist Nick was a little older at 14, and started dabbling with heroin. My other friend was a drummer too, we put our sets together. He had a ready made rock name- Rod Blacker.
Then Dad quit winery, moved south to Stoney Creek outside of Hamilton/steel town. I continued playing drums, stayed out of trouble/drugs for awhile. I played drums in basement, and painted my room in Deep Purple color matched from paint store/complete with blacklight posters, one was "Ghost Ship" if I recall. I also drummed along to CCR, and Grand Funk Railroad and Alice Cooper. A friend and I dabbled with creating/writing our own songs like "Eating Eel Pie Baby" which we recorded.
But we moved again to Fergus, bit north of Guelph. My Dad & 2nd wife who was Yugoslavian and pretty and curvy, I'll admit I kinda had the hots for her, even felt her up & down a bit, hey she wasn't my real mudda! At first I was ok involved in school & working at the family restaurant my Dad & her bought. I became fully versed in cooking, even by age 13 I could cook/run kitchen by myself, when my Dad & her went out. I lived in upstairs area of restaurant as was like a huge converted house with 3 BRs. I continued to play drums in basement which doubled as a food/supplies storage for restaurant. But I broke my wrist at 14 falling off gymnastics rings, which I can point to introduced me to opiates. Also my Dad got a liquor license, so we had a bar too. That just made alcohol readily available, and I'd drink onsite, and steal bottles of liquor and wine. When my cousin Dave was visiting who was only a bit older than me, we stold several bottles of wine, met my friend Steve, who kinda looked like a young Buddy Hackett. He was quite the instigator. So he planned to steal a car, we went along with it. Then all drunk we found a Datsun keys in it, pushing car off out of the driveway as owners slept, after our joyriding spree thought we better ditch car, said leave in a neighborhood with alot of cars, so not stand out. Steve suggested play lil' smash up derby, so we took turns smashing several cars. High speed chase/cop/me at wheel/outa gas, nearly shot in back.At 15: gun heist/juvie & 1st full sexual exp 14 yr old cute blonde judge's daughter died 2 wks later in muscle car crash set precedent on my future."Go west young man!"Horace Greeley.
When did you first start writing?
I'd say I started writing original songs around age 13. When I played drums, I collaborated with friend Norman, "Eating Eel Pie Baby" was one, and we recorded, and dressed up like rock stars Alice Cooper style etc. In later teens around 18 I started writing again when I worked as a shipper receiver driving forklift at a glass bottle warehouse. Possibly to alleviate boredom? Perhaps writing was just always stewing around beneath the surface of regular life and mundane activities, just trying to emerge.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story is a combo of my story, His Story, involving/intertwining tidbits of past, travels/places esp in last 19 years in 46 of 48 contiguous states(all except 12 miles from VT & ME)
So is there a moral to it?, the story? Not really, but "where sin abounded, grace abounded that much more." i.e. Romans 5:20 An epiphany or boink on the head moment of spiritual clarity, was bestowed unto me around 11-12 yrs ago...when I realized it's NOT about what I do or don't do, or what I've done or not done-i.e. commission/omission, but It's about what HE's done!(if y'all don't know Who or what I'm talking about, I beseechingly suggest y'all read The Gospel-my chosen nutshell descriptive verse is: "The Son of Man came to seek and save that which was lost" Luke 19:10) Comfort/nahamah i.e. Isaiah 40:1-2, washed over me like gentle warm summer waves, when I personalized the greatest attribute of grace, and I rest assured The Lord loves me no matter what! Whether I read The Word in any given day or not, whether I join myself to the certain ladies slinging flesh-i.e. Proverbs 5, or if I don't partake. For too long prior to that, I surmised if I abstained, I'd be held in higher favor by The Almighty/EL Gibbor. Like I'd attain spiritual brownie points, that would counteract my sordid past. But was like a second wave of true unadulterated freedom when invigorating grace engulfed me, the cleansing salty spray swirling in an all encompassing shower. The first wave of freedom of course was liberating me from the clutches of alcohol and substances, that had me in their unforgiving piercing claws, pressing on me in heavy handed layers, holding me in the abyss by their menacing calculating undertow, always just beneath the surface, where the light and breath above were only opaque phantoms.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Like many others, it seemed landing a contract with a conventional publisher involved being already recognized, or would have to dole out "elephant dollars" (instead of plan to make $ like Dave Edmunds of Rockpile said) to them, just to publish.
I sent in some of my writing to publishers who genuinely seemed to like it. Sending back praiseful comments. But most would want you to shell out bucks to be published like in upcoming anthology.
I paid to have a NYC studio to record music to my song "Captain Midnight" but they did like a country song, when clearly was like a driving rock anthem of sorts.
I demanded my money back, they wanted me to agree/sign I wouldn't use the crappy lame ass music they accompanied my song to. I totally agreed, saying wouldn't ever want to use their substandard music. I too wanted to be assured they wouldn't use my cool descriptive lyrics. I got my refund and I think we parted amicably, but who cares?
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been instrumental in most of book's exposure, what with giveaways and discounts.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I must say I'm genuinely enamored by the creative process.
It's a good feeling when I think I've written something of substance and value, even if it's only perceived by me. Whether others like or not, I'm not too concerned with. They can say they do, but do they really? Or they can be critical even bordering on spiteful, but that's on them. Like a real musician, not necessarily a good musician, just have to be like water off a duck's back either way. If they like it, fine, if they don't f'@& 'em, it hasn't stopped me playing/singing or writing, and won't ever!
What do your fans mean to you?
Well snowballing off last question, I'm not really a fan whoremonger.
However, I still treat EVERYONE with respect. Even a fool has their story, I may even indulge them. One can learn from all kinds of people, even if someone wanted to "sit down"(note: in OBC reviewer said, as for obscure lines/lyrics- I think reference from "Flavor Of The Week" not a carousel of various feline mates, but initial inspiration from band Evanescence, who I like- Amy Lee's amazing voice one of my fave female singers, but I heard they went from cross over Christian Rock("Breathe Into Me, "My Immortal")
to vampires, perhaps I don't know whole backstory, maybe vampires are record execs? But anyway, in lines/lyric I show how styles change over time, like with guns, or modes of travel, "carraige n' cobblestone to V10 on Autobahn" etc...) So as reviewer one could pick my mind as to meanings, I'd be hesitant, but then find I'm more than happy to oblige.
What are you working on next?
I'm kinda always writing something, but lately I've been watching SO many movies on free Prime, recovering broken foot, then delaying work and travel with recent COVID-19. So I've considered writing movie scripts.
Have a couple ideas presently, i.e. one involving school/college coming of age/discovery with field trip to Channel Islands where they search for spirit of shaman of Chumash Indians, for guidance and life wisdom.
Who are your favorite authors?
40 authors in Scripture & likes of Steinbeck, Conrad, London.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Sometimes I don't wanna get out of bed at all!, but either nature calls forcing out, or decide best to take a few whiffs of Eucalyptus oil then eat something like cereal with yogurt and fresh chopped garlic has to be done with my M. Fraraccio made in Italy stiletto, and get into routine with pushups and reading daily devotions from Psalms and Proverbs which centers me, and usually inspires. If is a wkd I can look forward to 2PM to "nothin' but the blues" on KJZZ, all of which soothes the soul, and occassionally inspires to tackle writing heart and headlong.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Most times like others do, just dwindling away the time kinda half mindlessly, checking emails of offers of things I'll never buy. Sometimes a story will catch my eye on Google news, and I'll be led down that rabbithole, and like Carroll wish I never did. P.S. John Lennon read Lewis Carroll alot, note: John is not the walrus, but is from book "The Walrus and The Carpenter."
Sometimes though I'll take time to "redeeming the time", and study something of lasting substance mainly Scripture, which I find quickens me, really makes me feel alive, right to the inner core of the Spirit within.
Oh, I also go to the gym 3X a week taking most of night into early AM sometimes just prior to dawn before all the morning types start bustling around and running their big loud self righteous mouths(but hmm see Proberbs 27:14), that is when it's not closed completely down due to COVID-19 and yet 24 hr fitness still charges, CEO says will extend? How's that gonna work on autopay? Into the next life, prop ya up on equipment like "Bernie's Weekend"? Well would be just like the plethora of thumb twiddlers who camp out on equipment with their phone. "Yeah babe been at the gym for 5 hours", "oh you must be getting in shape huh?" Well their frickin thumbs are really up to par. Sometimes I go to the beach, even at night, right up to waves, is inspiring and refreshing. Then some group of roving rowdies shock ya out of yer muse, and ya get pissed off and gotta pack it in. On a whim I went and just sat in my car at Newport down by pier, and played my "Blue Midnight" harmonica along to few songs on KOCI, then scum pulled up with all that BS dissipating ol' muse of moi, so I rolled on off in my car like Peter Gabriel song "In Your Eyes", all the way south along coast to San Clemente, then hopped on the hwy to Oceanside, then back at 65 mph along freeway, letting others pass me. Ahhh to abolish ego, is a process in itself, like other Gabriel(as in Peter, not the ultimate messenger archangel) line, "where ego-I go too."
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
See 'em scrolling on Smashwords or Amazon usually. But just peruse covers, titles, authors.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I have brief memories of writing songs when I was young about 7-8. Also wrote original songs when I played drums around age 13-"Eating Eel Pie Baby" was one I recall. Then some stories in creative writing in school, but can't recall exactly. I wrote a fantasy beach type story quite a few years ago about my daughter when she was young, about a magic golden shovel in the sand/treasure etc.
About 18 yrs ago I wrote an epic several page poem while driving semi in West Texas called "Suspended In One Spot In Texas"
What do you read for pleasure?
The Bible. It quickens or makes me alive. At times as Isaiah says, "I tremble at His Word."
Who would you like to meet in all of history and why?
Well Ist of course my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But also Paul writer of most of the epistles. Moses writer of the Pentitude. Elijah cause though he was a badass, he was flawed and depressed at times like we all are.
In my darker days when I was drinking alot and drugging incl LSD, peyote, mescaline + psylocybin mushrooms , I thought I'd like to meet Nostradamus, then in later years, I thought to meet Raphael Solares, shaman of the Chumash tribe. At times tripping up and down the west coast, I thought I was possessed by him, but I never told anyone, not even other drug trippers i.e. guy in Santa Barbara who lost a leg hopping a train(which I did a few times- 1st time in Roseburg OR where I'd drink along the South Umpqua river, but unintentionally passed out while drinking dangling legs out of open boxcar-when I 'came to' with freight train running full speed-too fast to jump as gravel on sides of track/ties were a blur-so "southbound again" like Dire Straits or Allman Bros.), I pushed/raced him 'round while we were tripping on "cid" like big dogs... It was like my private, secret identity.
