Interview with James Eddy

Published 2013-12-12.
Why are you releasing 'Diamonds' as a single book when all the stories are already available individually?
That's a good question although strictly speaking there is one story/poem - 'Diane' - that hasn't been previously released, which is included in the collection. The reason for releasing 'Diamonds' in this way is really just because I always intended to. Part of my thinking when I started to release e-books was to treat these things in a similar way to the way a band or singer-songwriter would release their music. They don't tend to release an album first and if they're just starting out they might release a whole series of singles before the album came out. In that way, it allows an audience to be gradually exposed to an artist and they can then choose to delve further into that artist'swork if they want to. I think that the release of 'Diamonds' as a complete collection only increases that choice. A person might read 'Heart over Head over Heels' or 'The Ghosts Are Out Tonight' and they might be interested enough to invest the time and money in the whole of 'Diamonds' or one of the other stories or whatever they want really.
What is your writing process?
I wake up and I write. It's pretty simple. Sometimes it's a bit more complicated than that though. Sometimes I wake up, I think and then I write, which is usually when I write the stuff that might be worth keeping.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
The short answer is Norfolk, although I'm sure that some people would question the idea that I have managed to grow up at all.
What Norfolk offered and continues to offer as an influence is wide open flatlands and acres of sky to project my thoughts, dreams, ideas and concepts onto; along with people that are strange and wonderful enough to be fascinating to me. I've been blessed in this way.
What do your fans mean to you?
To be completely honest, I'm not convinced I have any 'Fans'. Obviously, I hope that will change in the not too distant future.
Who are your favorite authors?
Jack Kerouac - for his spontaneity
Gabriel Garcia Marquez - for his truth
Charles Bukowski - for his bitterness
Emily Dickenson - for her beauty
William Shakespeare - for all those things and just about everything else.
