Interview with David Jensen

What inspires authors to write, and what do they achieve through writing?
Writers have stories that they need to write, similiar to a baker's desire to bake. It's also the satisfaction which comes when the story is finished, and the writer is happy with what he created out of his imagination. Sometimes the hardest part is creating a cover for the story! But in addition to our own satisfaction after creation, we also yearn for acceptance and praise from our readers, for that is the best payment one can recieve, good reviews.
Where was the picture taken with me and the Cat on my lap?
The island of Madeira, which lies off the west coast of Africa but belongs to Portugal. Lovely place for vacation!
How do you approach cover design?
Now that is a catch - 22 question! It was difficult at first, then I got creative and now do my own photos, (Murder at the Job). With Project Sabertooth, (we all know it is spelled incorrectly, but it looks so cool that way!), I discovered a colleague that was happy to do a Sabretooth Tiger for me. Lately I usually find good covers on Pixabay which fit into the theme of the story.
What do you read for pleasure?
Stephen King, and lots of other big-time writers, and as of late, I have burned through a couple of new King books while being laid up sick.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle. On the laptop, I have Adobe Digital Editions, but nothing compares to the feel of a paperback in the hand!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Smashwords. What else does one need?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
In the small township of Byron Center, a suburb of Grand Rapids in the state of Michigan. USA. The influence on my writing comes out in a few of my short stories, such as in "Withering away at the Homestead" and a part of Project Sabertooth.
When did you first start writing?
In 2014 with The Dark.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I had started again with the second part of the Sabertooth Project, but due to the fact that I have to date only recieved one review, regardless what I write, I am seriously thinking of shelving it for the time being. It is apparent that people who only read and not write can never understand the complexities of keeping the characters and storyline straight till the story comes to an end. Still, I will be putting out short stories, and a few short stories containing highly explicit sexual adventures!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
At smashwords we thankfully have a platform for our books and short stories. Looking into various publishing firms, I almost died of shock. You go broke paying for the publishing, and even if it would be a Bestseller, you only recieve peanuts in return. We indie authors write because it is a drive in us. If I had a 36 hour day, I could write for 20. It is also for me, as an older man, a way to retain and also improve my mother language English. During the day I speak only German. As an Indie writer, I'm in my element and can utilize my IQ, hopefully not making too many grammatical mistakes.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
As to this posting, I sold only five books, and one was to an aquaintance on the Internet who probably felt sorry for me. Since then, most of my books are free to read, and with over 2500 downloads so far, only one person has taken the time to post a review. So my success is limited to the fact that at least somebody is reading what I write, but only if it is for free.
What are you working on next?
Off and on, I was working on the second part of the Project Sabertooth saga, but my decision to finish it or not depends on reviews of Sabertooth Project. In the meantime, I'll put out short stories with eclectic themes.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I look through the different fictions on Smashwords.
Describe your desk
Most times it is messy! But there is order in disorder.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That people read what I write. Even if only a few people read my stories, I'm happy, for I write as a hobby, although after over 2500 downloads I've still only gotten one review.
What do your fans mean to you?
Till yet I haven't any.
Who are your favorite authors?
Grisholm, Ludlum, King.
What is your writing process?
Some days it simply flows from my fingertips, but when I realize on other days that I'm struggling with the story, I quit. It's a hobby and by forcing it, I'm not enjoying it. Ergo, work and not a fun hobby.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I own a house, so the question is self-explanatory!
What book is coming next?
The next full length book is a sequel to Project Sabertooth and it takes place on the Portuguese island Madeira. Maybe in during the winter 17/18. Till then, short stories for the lunchtime breaks.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Stephen King's Tommyknockers and the Mercedes Killer Trilogy. The fifth would be the complete collection of The Stand, also from SK. But that is more than five, sorry!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Probably all the comic books as a child, and then thousands of other books after that! I find that comic books are a good start for children if it animates them to read! And comics did that for me, much to the disdain of my father!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
More than likely that I wrote some while attending High School, but have no memory of it! The first book that I wrote was The Dark, which was typed in a sort of trance. The story simply seemed to be in me and flowed through my fingertips to the keyboard. In re-reading some of the chapters, I contemplated rewriting it to calm it down somewhat, due to the very explicit language in it. But, if the world was taken over by extra-terrestials, people would be swearing and retreating socialogically back to the stone age anyways so I left it as it is.
