Interview with Dominic Awoleye

Published 2018-04-23.
What is your writing process?
I am an abstract writer, I write on impulse when the idea flows in, I simply grab a pen and scribble down. I can write up to ten pages of an A4 paper at a sitting and then I move on to work or other engagements. At my leisure I type the draft into a manuscript and save till I get another idea.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I read was "The Director" a pacesetter's series. The story was about a young desolate Nigerian Child who grew into a big time armed robber and later met his waterloo in the hands of the law. The Story was so real even though it was a fiction. The book taught me that crime does not pay.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design must relate to the content of the book.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Gods are not to blame by Ola Rotimi
The God father by Mario puzo
Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe
The road to Omaha by Robert Ludlum
'Please do not say no' by Tony Onyiuke

These books are classics that I have read over and over, they inspire me.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read any good book, especially books that are suspense filled. I love prose and drama a lot.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Android phones
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most accessible for now is e-marketing. That's the way to go now if you must reach a wider audience
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Hmm, growing up in different Army Barracks in Nigeria, my dad was a Soldier and he moved a lot. The barrack life imparted a lot on my life because it exposed me to people of diverse Culture and religion living together in an enclosed community called barracks. The happenings in the barracks is enough for one to write about, I developed the creative mind of adventure and humour from the barracks, while the writing skill was developed as a literature student in my secondary school at Command Secondary School Abakaliki, I came in contact with several books there.
When did you first start writing?
My first writing attempt was at Command Secondary School Abakaliki. After reading a book titled "The adventures of Souza" I made a feeble attempt and wrote my version" The adventures of Bob Loco" I wrote about my childhood days. My friends read the book, though hand written and stapled into a book. The book was lost to one of my friends at it never came back to me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It dwells on the Perception of marriage by a newly wedded couple. each has his and her own opinion of marriage should look like, some people are conservative while some are liberal. Two strangers coming to live together forever is not an easy arrangement as they are from different back grounds with different views to life. yet they have vowed to live together "For better for worse" the story would teach a young Couple that Love and respect is the glue that holds a marriage and not "tolerance" because tolerance has an elasticity limit. It will break!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I am new to smashwords, but I am very positive it will be worth my while.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I am happy when people read my work and comment on how positive it has affected them. The lessons learnt from the message of my work makes me happy.

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work full time! I am only able to write during my leisure and during vacations
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
It is easy for me because I am a writer and I belong to many E-book fora
Describe your desk
I combine writing with work so I try to keep a clean desk so that I do not mix things up. Actually once at work, I hardly write. I write at home, my writing Table is in my sitting room and I try to keep it as tidy as possible.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
yeah! I joined an on line forum called naira land and I explored the Literature sections, I discovered that I could blend with the group because I naturally felt at home there. so I registered and started contributing by writing Poems and drama and behold the comments I got from People were awesome and I knew this must be it!
