Interview with Manny Pacheco
Published 2014-07-01.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing the Forgotten Hollywood Book Series in 2009. My work shares America's story through the eyes of character actors from Hollywood's Golden Age (the supporting stars who's names appear below the title of the film). Included in my eBook -- Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History -- Walter Brennan, Claude Rains, Lionel Barrymore, and Thelma Ritter. These and other actors will never have books written about them, since most scribes write about A-list stars as John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, and James Stewart.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History is the sequel to my first work. As of yet, it is only available as a paperback. Some of the actors I feature include Frank Morgan, Peter Lorre, Cesar Romero, Marjorie Main, and Lon Chaney Jr. I am currently preparing a third book in the series. Actors will include George Sanders, Keye Luke, and Edward Everett Horton.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As a self-published author, I am able to own the rights to the Forgotten Hollywood franchise. The advantages are obvious. I now have created a weekly radio show on the Financial News and Talk Network; an active blog at www.forgottenhollywood.com; and I am In production of a Forgotten Hollywood Documentary based on my book series. Obviously, the downside is that you pay for the creation of your product (Layout, Cover, Printing, Distribution) upfront. As of now, I have recouped the debt incurred by each of my books, since I have sold 4000 books over the last four years.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I get to tell stories that are intriguing, informative, and intelligent. Non Fiction lends itself to historical perspective. Once the stories are written, you can retell these stories at book-signing events, which is quite gratifying. I have become part of Rotary International's Speaker Series, and this helps me engage in fellowship with folks of a certain age, who are fans of classic cinema. And, it allows me to conduct weekly book-signing events.
What is your writing process?
Since I write chapters for my Forgotten Hollywood Book Series, hour-long segments for my weekly Forgotten Radio Program, and for my blog. I seem to spend each day inspired to write about classic cinema. Depending on bouts of inspiration, I choose which area of creativity works for me on a given day. Sheryn Hara of the Book Publishers Network offered me great advice when I began this journey. She said to take "one bite of an elephant." In other words... pace yourself.
How do you approach cover design?
I work with the Book Publishers Network on layout and cover design. Its a collaborative effort. Unfortunately, my go to person, Stephanie Martindale, passed away from cancer in December, and she was remarkable in the creation of Forgotten Hollywood's unique look. My next book is dedicated to this wonderful and talented person.
What are you working on next?
Currently my third book in the Forgotten Hollywood Series will compliment the Documentary production my team is creating. I believe the Forgotten Hollywood franchise is healthy and focused. Every day, I garner a larger audience of interested and loyal readers.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dr. Seuss, Kurt Vonnegut, and Walker Hamilton
