Interview with Gary Hensley

What is your writing process?
My writing process is not to be recommended for others. I use a process similar to how I studied in college - cramming!
I go off alone to a cabin in the mountains or maybe to the beach and I write for 8-10 days. I then go six to eight months without writing, but I am always plotting in the back of my mind.
How do you approach cover design?
I took a picture of my grandparents' old home place and submitted it to my editors, David and Leonore Dvorkin. David, who does cover design and book layout files used my picture and he did an amazing job of photo-shopping it for use as a cover. Leonore is an excellent editor and she genuinely cares about her clients.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like books of the Civil War era: I like courtroom drama: and, I like political intrigue and murder mysteries.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up near Kingsport, Tennessee which is just a few miles from the Virginia state line. Many of the characters in my book were shaped by the many folks I met when growing up there.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy has been the feeling of pride when I saw the proof copy - the feeling of accomplishing of a goal that I committed to many years ago.
What are you working on next?
I am considering a plot involving a lawyer, but it is not yet fully formed in my mind.
Who are your favorite authors?
I like John Gresham, Jeff Shaara and many, many others.

Set mainly in the Southeastern U.S. from 1924-1976, this is the story of Jim Taylor: lawman, lover, family man—and murderer. Early in the book, Jim’s younger sister Annie is raped and strangled. His search for her killer and the payback he exacts form the core of the story. Before the stunning ending, there are torrid love affairs, run-ins with vicious criminals, race riots, and repentance.
