Interview with Jan Summers

Published 2014-01-05.
So who are you then?
I'm Jan Summers (which may or may not be my real name). I live in the UK and my interests include history, sci fi, horror, music and the Goth/Alternative/Fetish subculture.
So how did you get here?
Growing up, I assumed I was the only one watching Star Wars and Star Trek and wondering what all the alien's private parts looked like, and as I grew older, how they used them. Roll on to the 21st Century and the coming of the internet I find out I wasn't the only one asking those questions, I started reading erotic fan fiction and then dared to write some. Of course these writings then mutated into being about characters and situations of my own. I had a bash at my own novel in 2004-2007, but my first child cropped up just at the moment I self published it, which meant everything had to go on hold. In all honesty, I didn't feel the publisher for that work was the right one as I had to severely censor my content. Then I discovered Smashwords who appear to be more in line with my more left field work.
So what have you written before?
A large number of short erotic fan fictions in the period 2002 to 2004. All of these were on websites that are now no longer with us.
The few that have survived on my hard drive sadly aren't very good!
Between 2004 and 2007 I worked on a collection of stories with interlocking plots and characters. As noted previously, this ended up in a self published volume, but I didn't feel I was really a good fit for the publisher in question, so I may be bringing some of that work, if not all of it, over to Smashwords eventually.
What inspires you?
The gothic/goth/alternative/fetish subculture is a big one. Being part of this myself I've met many real life people who've inspired characters that I've written about. Cult science fiction is also an influence. With that I think the trick is less to outright copy what someone else has created, but more to use it as a spring board for your own ideas.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote a comic in 1995 that lasted one issue. I had all these great plots and ideas, but it took more time to produce than I had to offer, and so it never went any further.
When you write character that has been inspired by a real person, how much of the real person ends up on the page?
Usually the physical description makes it into the text in some way shape or form. But I try to make a person's character define the kind of fictional being that I assign them. For example a kind and generous person might find themselves cast as an literal angel in something I've written, whereas if you were less than pleasant in reality, you're going to be the repulisive slug creature!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I don't follow or make mainstream music. On the whole I don't follow or make mainstream TV/Movies/videos. Hence, my written work is likely to follow suit. I know most of my subject matter is too 'out there' for most of the population, and I've just been looking for the place where I can find a home for my writings and they will fit in. In just about every situation in my life I've always felt like a square peg in a round hole, and if I can at least find a hexagonal hole to hang out in, that would be something!
What are you working on next?
Probably more short erotic sci fi related fiction. I have the outline for another novel written, but I know it will be a few years out of my life to write it, so I'm postponing it until the time is right. It explores Asimov's laws of robotics and how they would affect an attractive female robot of exact humanoid appearance. Whilst this may not sound very erotic, I remind you that Asimov's three laws of robotics are:
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Essentially, the second law is the main subject of the story as the heroine would be very attractive to humans and not be able to say no! The book would chronicle the first one hundred years of her life, and deal with the consequences of her being so long lived when the humans around her succumb to old age. I've also got an outline of the next one hundred years of her life so I don't know where this idea could end.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Pretending to be a musician!
Which authors don't you like ?
This will get me hated, but Stephanie Meyer. I'm sorry I know lots of people like it, but to me Twilight reads like very bland Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan fiction, but with all the wit and character development that Joss Whedon gave the originals completely stripped away. And whilst we're on that subject E L James beat me to the idea of re-writing fan fiction (in her case that based on the aforementioned Twilight francise) into a mainstream novel for people who wouldn't go near fan fiction (or even know what it was) and became a multi-milionairess in the process!
What themes run through your work?
The main theme that flows through all my work is unconventional relationships. Usually this takes the form of characters that are either biologically or psychologically different and how they relate to each other. Obviously this expresses itself in their sexual relations.
