Interview with Jem McCusker

Published 2019-09-29.
What are you working on at the moment?
I'm finalising Crossfire: A Storm of Wind and Rain Novella for release on October 31st 2019.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love C.J Archer - she writes paranormal historical fantasy. Her series are always an entertaining read with lovable characters on unique adventures.
Jan Henderson - His characters leap off the page. He writes a mixture of Middle-Grade, Thriller and Non-Fiction. The best thing about his work is you're always guaranteed to laugh.
Sandra Jackson - What can I say? She is the Queen of Suspense.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Life is busy, I work full time and have two young boys that keep me on my toes. Between music lessons, football and housework no two days are ever the same.
What is your writing process?
I generally talk out the characters and basic plot structure with some trusted writer friends and brainstorm from there. I then plot out each scene. After that I write the synopsis (this generally helps me to catch any gaps in pacing or plot) and then I write the first draft. I work with a wonderful critique group and generally send out the first draft for review. I implement the feedback and then work with beta readers before sending off to the editor.
How do you approach cover design?
For me, it needs to reflect the story. I always have a visual in my mind when I start writing but have learnt that Cover Designers are the best ones to tell you what it should look like. They know your genre, the market and what works well.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a wide range of genres.
I love a good crime novel. I recently discovered Dervla McTiernan and her Cormac O'Reilly series. The plots are twisty, the characters are well developed and the story keeps you turning the page and awake well past midnight even when you promised yourself only one more chapter hours prior.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have Kindle but also use ibooks.
Describe your desk
I don't actually work at a desk. I have a study set up but frequently find myself working at the dining room table, the centre of the house while family life goes on around me. It's busy, noisy and has lots of interruptions but it works for me.
What advice would you give to new writers?
Read! Highlight what you loved, note down what you didn't and learn from it.
Research your market. What is the average word count? Who is your target audience? Research plot structure and plot your novel out!
Surround yourself with writers and readers. Learn from them. Ask questions but most importantly set aside time for your writing and commit to it.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in high school. Mainly for English assignments and that kind of thing. I found that I enjoyed it and started a lot of stories that I didn't finish. It wasn't until my late 20's that I started to see my writing projects through.
