Interview with Edith Eveon Brown

Published 2014-01-12.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Every morning that I am blessed to open my eyes is confirmation that I still have things to accomplish before my life is over. As a result, I get out of bed to finish tasks from yesterday; respond to do-over-days which allows an opportunity to correct a wrong I might have caused or to help mend a broken-heart, and/or welcome the blessing of another day which allows me to walk amongst the living.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
It’s rare not to be writing when your profession is that of a writer/author. Therefore, I am always writing unless I decide to unhook from technology. At these times, I load my F-150 Pickup Truck with primitive camping gear and head for the hills/campgrounds with my German shepherd. Otherwise, I am a regular patron at community gyms and pools. I use these facilities 5-days a week to maintain a healthy life-style. I also spend time riding my motorcycle; as a long distance bicyclist - I participate in fundraisers, and actively function in my position as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually discover eBooks I read based on my preferred interests using Google search of various book vendors. It’s funny to acknowledge that I basically write eBooks and novels that I enjoy reading, and purchase eBooks that I can learn something that is applicable to my life or can be shared and helpful to others.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
As an “Ole School/Baby Boomer,” I still prefer reading the paper version of novels, newspapers, magazines and other publications. Frankly, there’s nothing as appealing to most boomers then the smell of paper and inks; as well as, the ability to dog-ear a page when you need a break from reading, and/or half-fold a page to save a paragraph for future reference. Otherwise, I prefer the Kindle as my e-reading device.
Describe your desk
My desk is an old wooden teacher’s desk which was used in public schools during the 1950s. The desk contains 6 removable drawers with brass handlers, and 2 pull out writing-boards located above the first drawer on the left and right of the desk. Other details are as follows: Weight: 175 lbs; Length: 4’ 6.” Width: 2’ 6,” and Height: 2’ 7.” It is an awesome spacious desk.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Brunswick (Glynn County), Georgia. I never thought much about Brunswick influencing my writing, but I guess it does. On one hand, I tend to write stories about family life which involves togetherness, jealousy, family secrets, heart-break, grief, unfair treatment, and the determination to survive. On the other, I write eBooks to help a reader become financially independent by using skills or hobbies he/she already possesses to start their own business, or start a home-based business by following my simple step-by-step business guides. Both writings are geared towards survival resulting from family life, health issues, or the economy.
When did you first start writing?
I really can’t recall a particular starting point for when I begin writing. As a youth, I never wrote short-stories, poems; nor kept a diary or journal like school associates. Instead, I had dreams and horrifying visions that often became reality. After employment as a federal employee in the personnel office; government jargon writing and helping associates get federal jobs by re-writing their applications became a way of life for the next thirty-one years. At some point in between, I begin writing 1 to 5 page notes regarding dreams, or a paragraph here and there of story ideas which filled a few file-folders, but these writings were only read by me. During these periods, my desire to write books was a deeply hidden secret which never diminished. Instead it materialized in 2002, after applying for a writing job announced by Lillie Ammann, Editor-in-Chief for Our Mail Network. This is where I begin my freelance writing career as an Information Publication Writer. Today, I write these publications for my own company.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest novel, "Consequences" depicts how circumstances can instantly change a person’s life. But people, spirits and past memories can open doors. John, the oldest living survival of a southern homestead and pastor of a church uses his wits to lead his clan, teach youths, and stand against evil spirits - even in death.

This book was written due to a dare issued by my son, aka Joker who is a motorcycle rider too; like his Mom.

“Mom, you are very insightful; although, you have weird dreams/visions at times. You write about everything other than your visions; I believe you see these things for a reason – why not share them with the world, or are you scared?” Joker asked.

“No, I am not scared; I just never thought about dreams/visions as interesting material for stories,” said Edith.

“I believe it is. So, I dare you to share it with the world,” said Joker.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I became an indie author because I enjoy the craft of writing which allows me to share information with the public on a regular basis. My indie association affords me the opportunity to determine my own fate as a writer, and the choice to use a variety of independent publication methods to entertain, educate and inspire the public; without publication restraints utilized by traditional publishing housings and publicists.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has contributed to my success as a writer and independent publisher by expanding their marketing network; allowing other eBook sellers to promote my publications which has increased my exposure and book sales as an author.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is sharing information with readers. My writings cover a variety of categories such as: how-to and information publications, news articles, religion, and novels. You will find my news articles to be authentic; my how-to and information publications to be an easy read and applicable to your life; all religion publications are well-researched and authentic, and my novels which are classified as creative writing to be very entertaining - sprinkled with personal dreams/visions and are original creations.

For the record: It warms my heart each time a reader takes the time to write a review or send me an email; letting me know what they thought about my printed books/eBook. As well as, how my publications have helped them, or what needs to be changed for whatever reason.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are very important to me because they dictate what sells or don’t sell. As an author, my ultimate goal is to meet the entertainment, education and inspiration needs of my readers; resulting in the assurance that my publications are authentic.
What are you working on next?
As of November 1, 2013, I begin work on my third novel, "The Family Crypt." It was my plan to have it published prior to the end of December. However, this novel has decided it’s not ready to end; so I am still dutifully hitting the keys on my laptop, hoping it will soon be over. Believe me – whenever the end occurs, I will celebrate with two glasses of red wine.
How do you approach cover design?
Usually, I get a hint for a book cover design from a dream, or while writing the first few pages of a novel. For instance my first book, “A Fist Full of Straws” deals with family life resulting from pains that were either caused by the individual or by others. The book cover depicts a Fist Full of Straw which relates to numerous potential decisions which are as useless as damaged drinking straws.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Anne Rice and Stephen King.
