Interview with Paula Baker

Published 2022-06-23.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Aidan works at his day job as a data analyst. On the weekends, there is time for skiing and hiking on the weekends.

Retired after thirty-four years teaching band and library, Paula has lots of time to play. When she is not writing, she is either skiing, golfing, hiking, kayaking, riding her bike or playing her trumpet.
What is your writing process?
Aidan is the creator. He sees the entire world of Abbarkon in his head and knows where the characters are headed. His job is to get Paula to see his vision so that she can write it down. There is often a fair amount of arguing and a demand for more detail--both during the telling and then again after the writing.
Describe your desk
Both Aidan and Paula have laptops that allow them to work where ever they feel most comfortable. In the winter, that might be in a comfortable chair or at a desk. But in the summer, it mostly means sitting on the deck enjoying the weather and the view.
What are you working on next?
Now that The Hawks trilogy is complete, work has begun on a new series. Set in a steam punk/fantasy world, Aldrich, a gifted young physician, lifts his nose from his books long enough to discover that his city is filled with problems. Of course, that means he has to do something about it. Along the way, he meets a street urchin named Fia, who turns out to have incredibly powerful magic, and Wilhelmina, an aristocrat with a flair for assassination.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing is magic. Anything can happen. You need only develop a character and give him or her a place to live. Then, it is almost as if they take on a life of their own. The story reveals itself as the character reacts to each situation. For Aidan and I, the discussions about "The Book" are filled with conjecture and debate. We talk about the characters like they are our friends as we try to figure out what they will do next.
Who are your favorite authors?
As a high school librarian, Paula has read almost every book that Aidan has plus a few thousand more. Among their favourites authors are J. K. Rowling, Cinda Williams Chima, Christopher Paolini, Laini Taylor and John Flanagan. The list goes on. Paula's favourite book is the one she is reading right now.
