Interview with Heather Mar-Gerrison

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'd tried going down the traditional route but I kept being knocked back and then I read an article about Smashwords and I looked it up and thought I'd give it a go... I've never looked back; that was in October 2010 and now I've sold more than 70,000 books through Smashwords awesome distribution network and I figure that maybe some folks actually do enjoy my stories even if the traditional publishers didn't think they would.
I was really nervous when I first published Becky's Diary and Re Vamp (they were the very first ones). The only way I can describe it is as if I'd walked down the street in my underwear - suddenly all these people know what's inside my head! Still - it's there; I enjoy writing it and sharing it - and yes I still get really nervous with each book I release - and no I never think my writing is good enough. I strive to do better with each one.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I think Smashwords have contributed to my success greatly. In my humble opinion Mark Coker is a genius and I am proud to be part of the Smashwords community.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I absolutely love coming up with an idea - usually at the most inopportune times like on my way to work or at the supermarket and then hurtling home and getting out the old laptop and start tapping away and suddenly I have a beginning a middle and an end (in fact half the time the end is the first bit I complete!) and then I have to go back and fill in the blanks and it's finally there...
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I find a lot through Facebook - the Boyfriend Bookmark is always a pretty good source. I also find quite a few through Goodreads. I find quite a few from Smashwords and I've downloaded a fair few - there are some awesome authors on Smashwords.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
A couple of books stand out as having a huge effect on me - A Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford - I cried for days after reading that. The other one that really got to me big time was The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger - quite the most heartbreakingly beautiful book ever.
But the first book I really remember reading and thinking "Wow" was Five Run Away Together by Enid Blyton - no really...
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything really - I am a bit of a wimp and I like a happy ending - the way I see it is that life is tough and not always happy - so I want to read something to escape reality - I have plenty of reality going on thanks!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle because it was a gift - but it's one of the early ones and isn't backlit so I usually end up reading on my laptop. I also read on my phone when I'm at work because it's easier.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have my own blog which I think helps quite a lot - and I've had a few reviews on Goodreads and on Barnes and Noble's website, but mostly I think it's been down to pure luck - and long may it continue!
Describe your desk
I don't have one - I sit on the sofa night after night (and day after day if I'm not working at the day job) tapping away while the TV plays in the background - honestly I haven't watched a full episode of anything on the last few years - my digibox is full of unwatched programs I've recorded in the hope that I might get around to them...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Nottingham; England and that's where I still live with my wonderful family. We moved away when we first got married, but moved back when we started a family for the really good schooling. The school described in my Seltham Community College series is the Senior School I went to - and the one my two teenage daughters now attend. I know the place like the back of my hand and I can picture it so well in my mind when I describe where the characters are standing or performing or whatever they're doing at the time and it helps me bring it all together better.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing for years - the first draft of the Ballad of Jon and Lisa was written the year after I got married in 1992. I had no idea what to do with it back then and kept it (hand written) in my drawer. A few years later I found it and wondered what the heck I could do with it - it seemed so outdated and so unbelievable that they would never be able to contact each other easily - it evolved then into Becky's Diary (Jon and Lisa are Becky's parents) and I finally published the original story of Jon and Lisa set in 1992, twenty years later!
Who are your favorite authors?
J K Rowling - Harry Potter is my all time hero... ever... Stephenie Meyer - I love Twilight. I always will; Julia Quinn; Sophie Kinsella; Marian Keyes; Johanna Lindsay; Danielle Steele to name but a few.
I really love the Thoughtless series by S C Stephens; I like a lot of Jessica Sorensen's stuff and so many others I can't list them all here - I LOVE to read as much as I love to write.
How do you approach cover design?
I've finally earned enough to re-invest a little and I am slowly changing my covers with really beautifully done ones from - I've done my best before but really there's no comparison - hopefully the new covers will make my books even more desirable and I'll be able to invest even more - here's hoping!
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on a brand new series called Riverside. I'm writing all five stories at once because they all sort of inter-link... Complicated but I like a challenge... It's about True and her four brothers, Tomas, Tatum, Toby and Trey...
I'm also working on a couple of short stories and have started another one in the Operation Boyfriend series called When Deanna met Lincoln.
I've also made a start on Clean Break which is the follow up to Summer Break too.... I think that should keep me busy for a while....
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To write the next paragraph - no really; every day I wake up and my mind is already full of what my characters are saying to each other... I sometimes think I might actually be a little insane with all these voices in my head....
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to go walking; I love baking - since discovering I'm wheat intolerant I've had to get far more creative with cakes and pastries - I still haven't mastered bread! I love reading and I love watching movies - my current favourite is Silver Linings Playbook - excellent movie - stop what you're doing right now and watch it...
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. Can I cheat and call the Harry Potter series one book? Oh, okay; if I really had to choose one of them I'd go for the Prisoner of Azkaban - it's where the books change and get a little darker and more in-depth - but the whole series is amazing - the way she knew exactly how to finish the series and tied everything up - absolutely outstanding. So - Harry Potter is number one...
2. The Time Traveller's Wife. I've only ever read this once - and for me that is something quite unusual - I generally read things over and over if I like them - the difference here is that this is soooooo sad. I hate sad books/movies/programs and I will check the ending of a book before I buy it if possible to make sure it ends happily - I know it's daft but I don't care! This book however got through my careful screening process and I'm really glad it did - I cried buckets and still do if I think about it but nevertheless - it's brilliant and I love it.
3. Thoughtless series by S C Stephens - I discovered this book on Smashwords website and immediately fell in love with Keira and Kellan (well more Kellan if I'm honest). I love the story of them falling love and I'm not usually rooting for the one who's stealing the girl from her boyfriend - but she did a great job of making you want Keira and Kellan to end up together - love it - and I've read it about twenty times and I sooooo can't wait for Kellan's POV in Thoughtful.
4. Can you keep a secret; Sophie Kinsella. I love most of Sophie Kinsella's books but this one just makes me laugh so much - absolutely brilliant from beginning to end.
5. When he was wicked, Julia Quinn - I love all of Julia Quinn's books but this one is outstanding - I just love Michael! If you haven't already read it - read it - it's brilliant.
What do your fans mean to you?
In a word - everything! Without them I would have no one to share my stories with. I absolutely love it when someone wants to connect with me because they've read my book and liked it.
