Interview with Pete Stanton

Published 2014-04-22.
What is your writing process?
I like to remove myself from the world and go somewhere quiet, ideally surrounded by nature. A lot of my ideas come from everyday situations which I write down and expand on later.
How do you approach cover design?
I like to pick a staunch image that has a vast amount of meaning to me personally, then I go ahead and almost try to recreate the feelings it leaves through my words.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first ever story that really influenced me was Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. It had only just been released and I was hooked from the get-go.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I find using social media is the best and cheapest way to market my work; I ask my friends and colleagues to share my books with their friends and so on and so forth.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Although nothing can beat a good paper book, my e-reading device of choice is a laptop.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Northamptonshire, England. My father lived in the countryside and I spent many a day exploring, fuelling my imagination.
Describe your desk
Non-existent. I use my lap or I go to a public library.
When did you first start writing?
My first ever experience of writing was a poetry collection when I was 12 years old, called "Poems from Heaven and Hell". At the time I thought it was amazing, I dread to think what I would think of it now!
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a short story, it's a very personal and emotional endeavour and I cannot wait to release it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a folk music aficionado and a passionate supporter of rugby union. To subsidise my writing I am also a talented salesman. Otherwise I enjoy watching television, socialising with friends and generally just enjoying the simpler things in life.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's allowed my writing to be seen on a global scale on dozens of platforms without having to go through a third party. Smashwords has given my writing freedom and complete control.
