Interview with S.A. Cook

How do you approach cover design?
If I can find an element of a photograph that captures me, I use just that element. As a writer, I value the reader's imagination and I want to allow him or her to create their own vision, based on my words. As far as verbiage goes, just the facts.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The books I reread, I consider my favorites, even though as an English major, I get that they are not always high art. But they make me feel good. They are, in no particular order, Sheila Levine is Dead and Living in New York by Gail Parent, Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin, The Reader by Bernard Schlink, The Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read whatever I want, from Romances to Science.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like my iPad. I can do it all, while I read.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I tweet and that's about it, so far. You'd never guess I worked for one of the largest advertising agencies in the country, would you?
Describe your desk
It's my bed, so...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in West Virginia, and it was just like in The Hunger Games. No, really.
When did you first start writing?
When I learned to hold a crayon.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I write to overcome the resistance to writing, so once I will myself to start, I'm never sure where I'll go with it. Why romance? Because I read some that was really bad, and thought, "I could do way better."
What motivated you to become an indie author?
There's not a lot of advantages to the traditional way of publishing. Don't even get me started on royalty percentages.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'll let you know in a few years.
