Interview with Tamara Yousry

What is your e-reading device of choice?
My mac.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Facebook and Instagram. And of course, word of mouth!
Describe your desk
Full but tidy. In the top lefthand corner are my stationery supplies (pens, pencils, highlighters, tape, scissors, stapler, ruler, etc). Just below that, I have important papers that need tending to such as outstanding bills (for example). I've got a post-it pad to write down important things I should not forget. In the top righthand section I have a jar of paintbrushes. In the centre, I have a computer pillow-type thing with a board on top in case I want to type on a couch. I also have a Vision Board at the back.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Kuwait until I was 11. After that I lived in Egypt for about two decades. In between here and there I lived in Scotland, England, Norway, Singapore and now Australia. Growing up in the Middle East has influenced my latest book, "My Patchwork Life" in shaping it to be an intercultural story that spans two different cultures. This is a true reflection of who I am and how I identify with myself.
When did you first start writing?
Ever since I can remember. When I was 8, somebody gifted me with a diary (the kind with a lock and key) and I began to write daily journal entries. I must have written about 10 different diaries over the next few years. It was a safe place for me to capture my thoughts and helped me sort them out as I developed.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's the story of a girl who comes from many different places and is searching for true love, only to realise that real love has to start with yourself and is an inside job. It's a work of fiction, but definitely reflects much of who I am as a person and what I experienced growing up.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always wanted to publish a book - always. But it never felt the right time; I knew I hadn't lived enough "life" yet. Then, one day, last year, it dawned on me that I was ready to capture all my experiences into a story about love. Once complete, I sent it off to various agents but heard nothing back. Then my husband's friend told us about Smashwords and I knew it would be the perfect platform to share my story.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's still early days to say that I have had "success", but my books has made three different sales since I published it three days ago - I feel stoked about that!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing allows anything and everything to be true. It is the space where all things are possible and where real freedom exists. I love (and have always loved) playing around with words. I also like that I have time to think about how to formulate a sentence or thought. I definitely write better than I speak and I guess the reason for that is that you have more time to construct.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Without them, my story couldn't come alive.
What are you working on next?
I don't have anything I am working on just yet as I would like to spend this next period promoting My Patchwork Life. I would love to write an autobiographical account of my life though - from my perspective, as Tamara, but I'm not sure exactly when that'll happen. I do believe I have a great story to tell.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
It used to be that first cup of coffee. Now I get out of bed to begin my day - especially as my 16 week old son needs me! He definitely inspires me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
At the moment, I am a full-time mum and that takes up all my time, practically. But before I became a mother, I would cook, paint, sing, take long walks, go to the gym, do yoga. I also had a part-time teaching job that took up a few days of the week.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like lots of books about self-development. I'm also interested in the mysteries...mediumship, intuition, the supernatural. Occasionally, I'll find an author who is able to tell a story with ease, which I will read. I like easy reading (chick lit, for example), as opposed to complicated plots and descriptions. I do love a good dialogue with quirky, interesting characters.
