Sorry, I thought this was disappointing; weak character development and stilted language throughout, particularly when those characters are given voice. Not helped by evident lack of proofreading.
Gooseberry

I read it all the way through as I was interested enough to see how it would end. The historic element - Victorian London - appears accurate and well researched. Some characters - including Bertha, perhaps surprisingly - work but others don’t chime quite right; Gooseberry at times seems too educated for his character. Overall, I quite enjoyed it but I’m not sure that I would rush out to buy others in the series.
1862

New Zealand is the setting and 19th century is the time period (clue in the title). An insurance claims investigator is checking on a ship wreck and the fate of its crew but he has another agenda, which is slowly revealed. This is a horror story, of sorts, and is very well written; there are literary merits to the writing and a story to be told. I recommend this short volume and I will be following my reading of it with others in this series. Well done, C.J. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Everything Fox, and Miscellanea
on April 02, 2023
This is a very short book, with just a handful of stories. It took me a while to get into it, partly as a result of the language used and style of the writer. Once I did, however, there is much of merit and interest therein contained. The main work - relating to the titular fox - reads like an updated ‘Animal Farm’, with anthropomorphic characters and hard-worn life lessons for all involved. The author’s academic credentials, reasoning powers and way with words shine throughout this volume. While initially perturbed that I wasn’t going to be able to finish this book I find myself likely to be seeking out more by this author.
