Anthony Aikman

Anthony Aikman died in Chiang Mai in 2011. He started travelling at an early age, in home-made canoes up the Thames, sailing dinghies that sank on the Norfolk Broads, ponies too fat to cross Dartmoor. Educated at Mercers and Westminster, he studied forestry at university. Travelling accompanied teaching posts in Rome, Tangier, Bermuda, the Solomon Islands and Sana'a. He spent time in Nicaragua during the Sandanista struggle and joined a trading raft down the headwaters of the Amazon. Other journeys took him across the Sahara and along the periphery of the Empty Quarter of Arabia. He has lived in Thailand - in a hut on stilts and on an old sailing boat - and in Cambodia. An admirer of Oriental culture and traditions and a member of the Tibet Society, he has written a number of books including The Caves of Segada, The Eye of Itza, The Brokers of Doom, Treehouses and The Farang. His earlier books were written in a treehouse in southern England and in a ruined tower in central Italy.
