David L. Watkins was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Mackenzie High School and attended Wayne State University, where he studied philosophy. He is the founder of DLW Publishing Company. An avid reader, David enjoys many different genres of books, from philosophical works to science fiction to books on the history of baseball. It is his wish that children of all ages discover a love for reading.

One of David's mother's favorite phrases was, "Without the love of books, the richest man is poor." Written on the classroom wall in the school his mother attended in the 1930s, the phrase resonated with David and has fueled his passion for both reading and writing. He does children's workshops on drawing and lettering. He has spoken at churches, schools and community events.

Smashwords Interview

What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favourite novels are Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, The Chosen by Chaim Potok and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. All three of these books are beautifully written and expertly crafted, but the common thread is "coming-of-age". The reader is allowed an insight into the minds of the teenagers. who are crossing the inevitable bridge to adulthood. Two of the books which have remained with me since boyhood are Big Red by James Kjelgaard and The Yearling by Marjorie Rawlings. These books about children and animals helped me to develop a lifelong love and respect for our non-human companions.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mystery books, philosophy books and baseball books.
