Peter Ness

Biography

Peter was born in Australia in 1960, and raised on various farms in rural South Australia. His parents were poor, so he was forced to leave school at the age of 16 and work on the farm. Unfortunately, that year was a drought and he had to take a job in a manufacturing firm. After working and saving money for the next 4 years, Peter then returned to complete his high school education at Port Lincoln High. He then paid his own way through university where he graduated with a degree in Applied Geology & Geophysics at the University of South Australia (formerly SAIT). There, he met his future wife and married, while still a student. Peter then completed a Master of Science and an MBA from UWA while working for over 10 years as an exploration and development geologist, and for large pre-feasibility projects, in Western Australia.

He moved to Japan in 1999 after graduating with a Master of Commerce (Finance) from Curtin University. In Japan, Peter worked at Temple University Japan as an education coordinator for several years and then in various finance roles in Tokyo-based jobs.

In 2013, he graduated with a doctoral degree in Science, Engineering & Complexity from The University of Tokyo; his thesis was on asteroid mining. He considers himself close to expert at some aspects of Martian geology.
Peter currently lives in central Tokyo not far from the new Olympic stadium.

His message to the young folk out there is: Education is the only thing that separates us humans from other animals. It isn't what you learn, but how you use that knowledge that is important. Yet, the more a person learns the more they come to realize how little they really know, which is humbling. On the other hand, people who have high levels of self-confidence don't need education, for they think that they know everything already! Don't let these people put you down, because they only do it to build themselves up at your expense.

His favorite saying is: "If the young, the old, or the stupid don't kill you .... time will get you in the end."
His motto is: Just Do it!
