The first formally organized bicycle motocross race took place in July of 1969 at a park in Santa Monica, California. In the 50 years since then, the term “BMX” has been indiscriminately applied to everything from Olympic racing to the arcane and specialized discipline of flatland freestyle, with myriad uses in between. It is arguably the most diverse and inclusive form of cycling out there, encompassing coastal cultures, urban stunt riding, and hard-nosed rural competition in a single, loosely drawn concept.
