Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in the Mississippi Delta. I am atypical of many Mississippi authors in that I have no interest in writing about life in the South. However, my home state did influence two themes prevalent in A Curse upon the Saints: religion and slavery.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Vaguely. I wrote a fable about a dinosaur and a lion when I was six years old. I don't recall the plot, or why I chose such a biazzare combination of characters.
