E M Swan

Biography

I was born in a little town called Thurso at the very northern tip of Scotland. The youngest of three children, we moved to South Africa in the mid 1970’s, then my mum, sister and I moved back to the United Kingdom at the beginning of the 1990’s.

My time in Africa was great. The wildlife, large open spaces, different cultures and people all helped feed my imagination for exotic worlds and places. It was during my teens that I grew to love Science Fiction and Fantasy, a love that continues to this day. South Africa had its problems though, most prominently Apartheid and segregation. The Man in the Bush is based on a real event where I hid a man when I was seven.

On returning to the United Kingdom, I joined the army and served for six years before leaving after getting married. I started writing during this time but only released my imagination after moving to Colchester in Essex. The area here is rich in history going back thousands of years, with Romans, ancient British queens, George and the Dragon, smugglers along the Thames and Viking invaders all combining to give any writer a flood of inspiration. The Dragon Pendant was inspired by real places and events here. I wrote the story for my daughter. It’s the first in a series of books, the second of which will include Scotland’s national animal, the Unicorn.
