Bio in Marysue’s own words…

Hi, I’m Marysue G Hobika, and yes I like the G because it says a lot about who I am and where I come from.

I’m from a small rural town called Caledonia, which is about 20 miles outside of Rochester, NY. Nothing can really compare to growing up in small town where you know everyone and everyone knows you. My high school graduating class had only 96 students, so it is safe to say that I knew them all.

Many of my ideas come from my childhood and having lived in this tight knit community. It was a safe place to grow up and I remember riding my bike all over town with my friends and my cousin, stopping at the AM/PM minimarket to buy candy or big 32oz sodas. During the winter we played out in the snow and even tooled around on my friend’s snowmobile until I kept making us crash because I wasn’t leaning the right way. It was a happy childhood and one I wouldn’t change for anything.

Before heading off to college, I decided to spend a year as a Rotary exchange student. I was curious about what it would be like to live in a foreign country and truly be assimilated into their language and culture. I had taken Spanish in high school and it had immediately clicked, so Spain was a logical choice for my study abroad. I spent a year in the Canary Islands and my passion for the foreign language blossomed. A quote I once heard was, “To speak two languages is to have two souls.” And that is exactly how I feel. Who knows when I might decide to weave details from my experience into a book?

When it was time to go to college I was ready for a big school setting with little anonymity, but I didn’t want to be too far from home. I chose to attend college at SUNY at Buffalo to study to become a Spanish teacher.

I was a Spanish middle school teacher until I decided to stay home and raise a family of my own. Currently I live in Pittsford, NY with my husband, three children and a pug. My house is a busy place with kids coming and going. They all offer inspiration for my books.

I’ve been a big reader all of my life and so about two years ago I decided it was time to sit down and write one of my own. I started with a character, Mikayla who goes by Mike, whom had been bouncing around in my head for about one year. And from there the rest of the story fell into place. I would get up early every day to go running and as soon as I got home I would sit at my computer and pound out Mike’s story. It was summer and my house was quiet for a couple of hours and I took advantage of it. Once my first story was complete, it wasn’t long before another popped into my head and began to take shape.

One thing I have learned is that stories don’t write themselves. I try to make time every day to sit down and write. I find I do my best thinking when I’m in the shower, driving my kids around, or right before I fall asleep. I always keep a moleskin notebook handy that a dear friend of mine gave me as a gift, so that if an idea occurs to me I can write it down.

I don’t know where this journey will take me, but I know I still have a lot of stories inside of me that are dying to get out.
